NO-EMOTION: An emotion for Freedom.
Throughout Clynes' book, little attention is given to no-emotion and many of the subject responses regarding no-emotion clearly indicate a misunderstanding of what it is ... let alone if they could express it. We have already discovered that anyone can learn, reasonably quickly, how to express reverence.
THE EMOTION OF NO-EMOTION, as I have understood it and worked with it, is a state sought by all who practice meditation. One of the reasons one may take up meditation or the martial arts is to LOSE the dominance of the Ego and make it part of an identity TEAM composed of one's Basic Personality, Unconscious, Ego, Superego, Personal Spirit, and Higher Self. Often persons who enter either of these forms of discipline are aware of the frequent destructive nature of a controlling dictator-like Ego. In reaction, they seek to destroy, inhibit, or "lose" their Ego.
LOSING ONE'S EGO, is not the intent of meditation or martial arts disciplines nor is it constructive. It is our Ego which provides us with motivation, reward, and action. Without our Ego, we lack will and direction: we are just along for the ride. Persons who enter self-development with the non-spiritual attitude that in order to cope with strength and dominance one must destroy --- find their journey long and hard.
WHENEVER FORCE IS USED TO SUPPRESS and CONTROL, it only succeeds in building a stronger enemy. Acknowledgement, acceptance, negotiation, reward --- management is what is required. A manager who cannot be heard and who does not make her/his presence known is ineffective. It is the state of No-Emotion which places our Personal Spirit in the position of manager - co-ordinator - facilitator. It is then that we have real freedom and choice of direction and response.
EMOTION VS NO-EMOTION.
Many people, lacking direction and coming from an authoritarian, materialistic, Ego-centered society assume that all consciousness is dominated by emotions which are easily manipulated by, deceived by and motivated by the Ego. For them, life without emotion is to live as a machine, robot, "vegetable".
TRAINED AND MENTORED TO IGNORE this capability --- for it is a threat to Ego domination, this concern is understandable. So, let's set the record straight. From the position of Sentics, No-Emotion IS an emotion. It is a state of consciousness and of being. As mentioned earlier, it is the core state sought through all meditative techniques and many religious practices. Its characteristics include:
- openness = non judgemental;
- seeking, anticipating = non authoritarian;
- humble, receiving = non-intervening;
- clear = non-cluttered; (not "vacant")
- confident = free of fear and anxiety;
- relaxed = non-intense, non-compelling.
NO-EMOTION is a state which anyone can develop and elicit whenever they wish.
Its benefits are numerous:
- Your Higher Self can be communicated with more easily;
- Planning becomes more realistic and less fantasy driven;
- Other emotions become more clearly defined and expressed;
- Reverence experiences are more frequent and spontaneous;
- Listening, awareness, retention, and empathic skills are optimized;
- Reality is more accurately perceived: denial and desire are removed;
- Meditation experiences are deeper and health is improved.
ONE'S No-EMOTION CAPABILITIES can be developed by any or a combination of strategies.
Here are some:
- Deep relaxation (self-hypnotic);
- Effective listening courses;
- Meditation (opening of the mind);
- Prayer (asking for guidance, ...);
- Self-hypnosis (quieting mental chatter);
- Sentics cycles exercises (awareness);
- Tai Chi Ch'uan (focus and involvement);
- Yoga (focus and dynamic relaxation).
YOU NOW HAVE NO EXCUSES for not experiencing and benefiting from the emotion of No-Emotion. Consider: Without one of the key emotional abilities of expression you are sacrificing a potential for greater harmony, success, health. Can you really afford to pass it by?
EMPATHY: An emotion for Hope.
EMPATHY is an inherently constructive and advanced emotion.
In it, we permit ourselves to "feel" the circumstances and feeling of another person ... to become as them. Empathy is a melding of fantasy and reality. We have difficulty realistically imagining ourselves in a reality with which we have had no contact. Thus, a wide range of experience and a keen sense of listening are most helpful. That is, one cannot realistically imagine something which one has never experienced. This is the difference between egotistical intellectualized unrealistic fantasy and creative applicable imagination. One wastes time and effort; the other saves time and effort.
EMPATHY DEMANDS that we be sincere, honest and open.
We are applying all of our resources for coping and survival to the benefit of another person --- a person we might otherwise hate. We are not involved with the other person on an ego basis. We have no intent to pass judgement and provide status quo advice. Such would often be irrelevant for had such advice been constructive the person would likely have known about it, been informed of it by others, and would have followed it.
DEVELOPING EMPATHY can be facilitated by doing sentic exercises.
Dr. Clynes states that potential as follows:
- "An important aspect of the special experience of sentic cycles is that corresponding to the various sentic states that make up the cycle; one experiences a succession of attitudes. That is, with each successive state one experiences the particular world view of that state. To know these attitudes intimately and clearly is to be conscious of aspects of human nature which we usually call 'intuitive' or 'instinctive.' Recognizing these as cognitive sentic processes helps us clarify the concept of the 'intuitive': attitudes and distinctions implied are not so much the result of specific situational content, but seem to be part of the nature of the quality itself, experienced in its generalized form."
EMPATHY IS ACHIEVED MORE EASILY by being able to go into a state of No-Emotion: full awareness and mental alertness without anxiety, fear, pride, defense, judgement --- without Ego or Superego. It is in this mood of good will that we can practically express All Encompassing Unconditional Love. It is with that expression that we have the greatest power to change the world and the lives of others for the better. The world will be better or worse for your presence. There is no life contribution which equals nothing.
WE ALL INFLUENCE THE WORLD.
Even a hermit, living by himself and without contact with others influences the world. Had he chosen to express the negativity or loss or independence within him within society, he might have spread destruction, OR, innovation. Had he chosen to express the positivity and independence of his reverence for all things, he might have encouraged others to share such an attitude. As a hermit he has positively influenced the world by not expressing what he may only be able to release as negatively. Conversely, every person has some gift or talent or capability which can be developed and shared constructively with others.
A HERMIT OFTEN STEALS/STEELS HIS/HER POTENTIAL of constructive sharing from others who could have benefited. The reality is not one or the other but both. A non-involved person brings fear of self and theft of self to the world. The empathic person brings acceptance of self and contribution of self to the world. You have a choice. None, a little, or a lot ... the Mountain Echo awaits your voice.
SENTICS EXERCISES:
The Touch that brings to Life.
Sentic cycles is a simple means by which a person, in his or her own home, can generate in himself or herself a wide variation of common basic emotions during a period of about 30 minutes. This method allows one to experience emotions from a meditative (quiet, relaxed, open-minded) stance while in a state of active expression. I have had persons with hypersensitivities who did little more than practice sentics cycles and find their health considerably improved. Other facilitators, therapists, and researchers have reported the same.
WHAT YOU REQUIRE:
- a sentic cycle pre-recorded cassette tape;
- an instruction manual;
- a finger rest;
- a means of playing the tape;
- a quiet, private space;
- a comfortable sitting position;
- about 30 minutes of time.
Sentic cycles are deceptively simple to practice.
The sentic cycle tape has a number of timing taps between the names of specific emotions. The duration and number of taps for each emotion are timed in relation to the normal period of expression for the emotion involved. By providing the appropriate biological timing for these expression, one is given an optimal mental environment for the exercises. The beginning of each click or tap signals you to start your expression of the stated emotion.
GOOD POSTURE IS REQUIRED.
One may sit in a straight-backed, or, in a balans chair to assist in this purpose of reducing physical stress. If the chair back is hard, a small flat cushion should be placed at the back to compensate for this. One's feet are best placed flat on the ground with the thighs lightly supported by the chair.
A FINGER REST is supplied for you to physically "express" each emotion in the form of fingertip pressure and movement against a pliable yet not spongy surface. It is usually attached to a stable flat surface at the same height as the chair seat. The finger rest is about the size and pliability of an inverted 1 inch (25 mm) rubber furniture leg or cane tip. It is temporarily fixed to a table or other form of appropriate height with a Plasticine-like compound for secure holding yet easy removal. You can permanently attach the rest to a particular spot for routine use or easily take the kit with you to and from the office or on business or pleasure trips.
THE POSITION OF YOUR ARM and MIDDLE FINGER (used for expression against the finger rest) are equally important. The finger pad (opposite side of the finger to the finger nail), should rest on the surface of the finger rest. Note, this is not the finger tip. The upper arm should slope slightly forward and the forearm is best placed if it declines slightly ending with the wrist and fingers slightly bent but not flexed.
FOR OPTIMAL SUCCESS from your exercise --- posture, comfort, stability and height of the finger rest, must all meet the stated requirements. Time should be set aside for the exercise with the same priority as an important meeting or appointment. This can positively change your life --- it's worth the time. The environment should be conducive to a meditative state: without distractions. The reasons for this is that variations will typically result in confused and multiple emotional expressions as a result of:
- uncomfortability = anxiety, frustration, short attention;
- poor posture = poor circulation, tiredness, clouded thinking;
- unstable finger rest = anxiety, fear, frustration, distraction;
- awkward height of rest = restricted expression, improper expression;
- flexed muscles = energy consumption and eventual tiredness;
- bright or flickering light = distraction, annoyance, anger;
- eyes open = solicits the Ego to interfere; preoccupations;
- loud or faint tape volume = frustration, distraction, numbing;
- interruptions = acting out of currently exercised emotion.

Aging: just another hypersensitivity?
A CHANGE IN CELL METABOLISM and a reduced ability for cell regeneration is the number one cause of all so-called premature aging symptoms. This change is mostly the result of an accumulation of waste products in the tissues and organs and damage to such tissues such that the feeding and oxygenation of the cells is hindered.
