Sentics: The Touch of the Emotions.
A concert pianist, neurophysiologist, electronics engineer, biocybernetician, computer inventor, poet and philosopher published their findings about emotions, in book form in 1978. They were all interests and skills of one man --- Dr. Manfred Clynes.
MULTI-TALENTED LEARNING has been discouraged in Western societies as wasteful and unproductive. Yet, most innovations and new insights arise from persons who by benefit of a wide range of experience and study are able to question, seek, and acknowledge truths which enable advances in the empowerment of mankind. Such were Dr. Clynes' discoveries.
CYBERNETIC TECHNIQUES (automatic feedback control through electronic monitoring of human communication patterns) were used by Dr. Clynes to study regulatory mechanisms designed to control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, etc. in the late 1950's. The purpose had been to assist in resolving psychiatric problems.
THE BIOLOGIC LAW of UNIDIRECTIONAL RATE SENSITIVITY (URS) was formulated by Dr. Clynes as a result of his research. It would revolutionize biological research. What he found was that our senses are more perceptive of changing factors than those which are static. Most human senses are sensitive to an increase (one channel) or decrease (second channel) in the intensity of temperature, pressure, smell, light, ... yet some have only one channel and only register a RATE of intensity (smell).
- The question arose:
Does everyone perceive frames of common reference the same, or, is that sameness which we develop through communication simply learned.
BY CYBERNETIC TESTING of physiological brainwave responses to word cues calling for specific emotions, Dr. Clynes confirmed that all humans experience basic emotions internally in the same manner. Where confusion may arise is NOT in the internal experience of the feeling but in the multiplicity, complexity, and uniformity of words and phrases which we use to describe such experiences. It is as if humans either once had the capability to telepathically and perfectly communicate, or have the physiology to do so but have either lost the skill or not developed it.
SENTICS became the new science of genetically programmed (hereditary) dynamic forms of emotional expression. Precise patterns of physiological and behavior patterns were found to be common for each of the emotions tested. These patterns were termed Essentic Forms. Humans became defined as being capable, equally and uniformly, by virtue of their brain physiology, to experience a wide range of emotions. Studies of emotional differences and similarities yielded some surprising findings:
-
"No significant differences between essentic forms produced by male and female subjects have been observed so far. Subjects are all able to experience at least some of the emotions on the first trial. After three trial sessions the effectiveness, as reported by the subject in terms of which emotions they could feel, is well over 90 per cent.
AT FIRST, subjects who may have had difficulties with one or two of the states, find that this difficulty diminishes with subsequent trials. Self-scoring indices, in which a subject scores himself one half hour after completion of the test concerning the intensity of the separate emotions experienced on a scale from 0 to 5, give an average intensity of emotions from four hundred subjects as 3.8. Subjects on the average tend to have least problems with anger, rarely with grief and sex, more with hate, love, and joy in that order.
REVERENCE is an emotion with which the most people seem to have difficulty --- an emotion that half the subjects are 'out of touch' with. It is usual in these subjects, however, to find scores for this rising from 0 to 3 or 4 after three trials. If instructions (for doing the sentics cycles) are misunderstood and subjects do not modulate their touch, they also report that they do not experience the state, but feel boredom instead."
THE ESSENTIC FORMS and emotions studied most and reported on were anger, hate, grief, love, sex, joy, reverence, and no-emotion. Others studied included hope, courage, guilt, and shame. It was acknowledged that there was perhaps not more than twenty basic sentic states. To this one could add emotions which were mixtures of the basic states, such as envy.
THE KEYWORDS USED in English had to be carefully and accurately translated if subjects from other cultures were to express the same emotion. When that was done, the brain waveforms were consistent with those of other subjects. Emotions were felt equally, neurologically by all humans.
THROUGH PRACTICE, a subject would also tend to discover the precise essentic form or optimal expressiveness within her/himself. There was little room for error or confusion --- when the learning and practice of an emotion was not from a confused or mixed emotional environment. What the research tests demonstrated also was that a person can feel an emotion without it having to be tied to a thing or a person. Western cultures have always assumed that if one is angry, one must be angry at something.
FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF HEALTH and the hypersensitive person, this is an important breakthrough in understanding. It could assist people in understanding their illness and reduce the likelihood of their multiplying their Energy Blocks and making their health worse by unnecessary feelings of confusion, grief, guilt, misunderstanding, shame, fear, paranoia, and, terror.
LARGE NUMBERS OF RELATIONSHIPS AND MARRIAGES have been fractured, dissolved, and destroyed because individuals who were hypersensitive were over-reacting to a chemical, additive, food, or toxin. Feelings such as anger, rage, confusion, paranoia, --- welled up inside them ... and they knew not why.
Emotional Death and Rebirth.
"WHY," CANNOT GO UNANSWERED in a culture where everything is rationalized. Since science, nor any human authority has made the connection between substances and triggered feelings, the expectation that "something" has "caused" the feeling is usually assumed. In any relationship, the "thing" that is most often present to get the blame is one's spouse or significant other. How often we have heard the phrase to justify a negative emotion, "You made me do it," or "If it wasn't for you ...," or "You made me feel that way."
HUMILITY IS NOT ENCOURAGED in competitive, individualistic societies. Often a person may simply be unable to accept the confusion and anxiety of having to admit: "I'm angry and I don't know why!" It is little wonder that she or he feels compelled in this direction of absolute resolve for we easily target persons who express emotional confusion (the more aware, confident, and truthful) as mentally unbalanced, or insane.
FEW PERSONS INVITE SOCIAL REJECTION through labeling --- and the loss of emotional support by "trusted and loved" family and friends in addition to the larger public masses. Yet this IS the reality. Hypersensitive persons are FORCED to express emotions in accord to the biochemical confusion occurring within them from the actions of an over-reactive immune system. But how can we use this information to improve our health.
POSITIVE EMOTIONS ARE CONNECTED TO GOOD HEALTH.
This has been verified in endless studies in the past 20 years.
So why not simply practice experiencing positive emotions. One reason such an approach is limited is the Ying-Yang theory of Eastern medicine. Within this concept "hot" does not exist without "cold." "Good" does not exist without "evil." Neither, "Joy" without "Grief".
EXAMPLE:
At a particularly challenging point in my life, I realized that I could not feel ANY emotion.
I was operating like a rationally driven robot. I had denied all of my "negative" emotions because they were too intense and I had not been taught how to govern them but how to suppress them. Their intensity had grown with the number of energy blocks I accumulated and the degree to which I was becoming hypersensitive.
CONVERSION is a psychological defense which blocks out what we cannot control, yet feel deeply concerned with. It prevents halting anxieties by substituting blanks in our memory recall and association. Mine was working to protect me. What I could not control, could not cope with, felt guilty and ashamed for having, and feared terribly --- for what I might act out if I lost all control --- was simply excluded. No emotional experience, no negative emotions. I reached a point at which I could not feel anger, fear, anxiety, rage, jealousy, paranoia, terror, grief, shame, or guilt.
A SIDE EFFECT TO EMOTIONAL DENIAL arose.
With the "negatives" gone, I found that I could neither feel joy, happiness, contentment, reverence, empathy, love, sex, sharing, hope, compassion, sympathy, or no-emotion. I simply existed and carried out my duties. I considered actions without attachment to others and without concern for myself. It was as if I were watching myself and the world, detached as one is when watching a movie in a theater.
FOR THE RIGHT SOCIAL (SuperEgo) CAUSE, I could have become the ultimate technician --- the ruthless hunter, the "mechanic" killer, the "calculating" mercenary, the immoral aggressive salesperson, the professional thief. I entertained them all and lived inside all of them. It wasn't that I suppressed my good emotions. I could not remember what they were like. It was as if I had never had them. It wasn't that I had lost my constructive emotions, I did not know where I had put them. We never lose our emotional capacity until death.
OPPORTUNITIES CAN BE CHALLENGES.
I was then presented with not one but three opportunities.
There are always such opportunities available: wars, political causes, mass injustices, financial desperation, people whom others believe "need killing", carelessness on the part of others. It was at the point of making such a decision that I stopped the "movie" in horror and tore it to shreds.
AWARENESS CAN BE SHOCKING AND MOTIVATING.
I felt vacant, violated, deceived and enraged.
It was as if someone had torn out my "heart" ... and I wanted it back! I allowed the negative emotions to surface. Their presence motivated me to take action and responsibility for my life --- MY life. Until then, I had grown up on the basis that my life was what others wanted. Parents wanted one thing. Friends expected something different. Associates demanded something yet again. Spouse wanted something more. Religion placed more restrictions and expectations. Clients had their demands. Even enemies assumed what they wanted. Everyone OWNED me, I just followed orders.
INABILITY TO COPE WITH NEGATIVE EMOTIONS, to be assertive, to accept myself --- had all contributed to my giving away my soul, piece by piece, until nothing was left. Now I was taking it back. I didn't know how I was going to do it, but I knew it was a matter of spiritual life or death. I found an understanding for my negative emotions and how to make them easily manageable. I found out how to turn down the fire of intensity into a manageable glow. I found out how to experience emotions I had never known existed. It seemed like I had searched all my life for something I knew existed but did not know what it was. You can make it through also.
IF YOU WANT TO CLEARLY FEEL EACH EMOTION, undiminished by unresolved and conflicting concerns and demands --- seek to be able to feel a full range of emotions. We can practice "feeling" without having to experience circumstances which arouse such feelings --- without acting them out. Sentics cycles encourage this ability. We can then choose to express those which are positive and which will contribute to our good health.
I WANTED EMOTIONAL FREEDOM, not emotional imprisonment.
If YOU want that, you have to break your compulsive patterns and release your energy blocks. The rest of this site and the references and suggestions offered provide you with many choices and alternatives for doing just that. In the meanwhile, which emotions will assist you the MOST in getting to and staying in excellent health?
REVERENCE: An emotion for Health Impact.
EMOTIONS OF REVERENCE and No-EMOTION --- from my personal experience both within my own recovery and in the progression of others who are releasing their
Energy Blocks and wishing to make contact with their Higher Self --- have proven to hold the greatest positive health impact. It is significant that in Clynes' research he found that 50 percent of North Americans cannot feel reverence. Several of his subjects described their experience of reverence as follows:
-
"(Reverence) was just a quiet meaningful experience in which I was in touch with something I could not name. Occasionally there were images of the country, where I live, possibly of animals, but primarily it was a contact with something very deep inside me and if it went in any direction, it was upward."
-
"I started to think about a blade of grass --- so simple yet so beautifully created. I started to pray but very differently than before. I seemed to move out of the focus of attention in not just asking for help for myself but asking God to help me understand and see the needs of the people I care for and to help me show my love for them: just to actually look at other people and not only at myself and my problems. It felt great."
