What is "Active Language" ?
Read through the following and the companion page on Passive Language.
Then, note the phrases you use throughout the day. Write them down.
Even try to be aware of the thoughts you have in your background thinking.
What feelings are you experiencing? Try and determine this once an hour.
Whatever you are feeling, ask yourself what the belief/language behind it is.
You do have a Choice.
Yes, you CAN decide what you accept to think.
If you don't like it, you can change it.
If you don't like what you are feeling, you can chose to feel differently.
You have a right to your feelings, yet, they do not say who you are.
The feelings you express drive the actions you do.
If you act to impose, victimize, or hate others, you drive all away.
You can choose to be abandoned, or, to participate.
Only the familiarity and ease of what you think and believe MAKE you do so.
EASY is simply what you have practiced or heard thousands of times.
If you choose to mentor and educate yourself, you can choose what you want.
If you do not want what would be best for yourself, do you know Why.
Others are sometimes best to be put forward first, sometimes, yet NEVER always.
When and Why do you put yourself forward? Is that fair? Is that a positive?
When and Why do you put others first? What is the positive in that, for you?
Doing unto others as we would have them do unto us
has been a Spiritual Principle and a Moral Belief for most of human history.
It fails when only a few choose to have the humility and courage to do it.
YOU are part of that whole.
If YOU want more encouraging, acknowledging, and love for yourself ..
You must also be ready to offer more of these to others, even enemies.
It is difficult to abuse someone who respects and encourages you.
Others will see and know you for what you do, not what you say.
Others will choose to support someone who is Consistent AND Positive.
Persons who commit themselves to DOING the best for themselves and others attract, directly and indirectly, positive influences from other people and the universe.
Active language is about DOING.
Doing is about Reality, not idealism, fear, or fantasy.
DO your feelings out of choice. They will become your friends.
DO what you would respect from others and we all WIN.
Active Language is about being Responsibly Assertive.
SAY what you want, not what you think others want to hear.
SAY what you believe, not what you are afraid others will deny.
Why is Active Language important
Active language advertises that we are confident in what we do.
Active language tells others that they are welcome.
It tells others that we are focused and interacting.
We are planning, directing, asking, doing.
It tells us that we are alive.
Losing much of our Capacity for Action you have experienced, IF you have CFS-ME. If we want our Reptilian Structure to set our activity threshold at that lower point, all we have to do is to keep rerunning that video in our mind. Much of our semi-conscious self-talk is like office background music. It goes on so automatically that we are scarcely aware that it is even happening. At that point we are using it much the same as self-hypnosis, or, sleep learning. That means that every time we let the recording run, we are accepting and encouraging that state of mind, and being, into the present. Is that what we want?
Our Reptilian Structure is that basic nerve foundation of our brains and spinal column which is considered more primitive than our complex Limbic (Emotional) and NeoCortex (Conscious rationalizing) nerve structures. It was named Reptilian because it is the main nervous structure of snakes and other reptiles, THEIR brain, which they share with us. If you have CFS-ME, it IS what will ultimately determine HOW you live, HOW LONG you live, and whether you recover or not. It's responsibilities include your immune system, your organ functions and harmony, and, your ENERGY availability. It learns by repetition. It notes a pattern or association according to strength and familiarity. The stronger, more urgent, and more life stabilizing a response is to a perceived reality, the easier it becomes for that response to become a learned reaction, automatic.
Patterns which work on our behalf to bring us to health Recovery, would be a Real Benefit. If we could make these easy, positive, and automatic, a lot of time and energy could be saved. The kinds of patterns we could encourage include these:
- Ideals.
- Skills.
- Habits.
- Beliefs.
- Attitudes.
Encouraging Reptilian Patterns is not something we can just consciously will to happen. Our Reptilian Structure does NOT learn through rationalization. It doesn't wait for our consciousness to say when to have our hearts beat. It doesn't wait for us to consciously tell it when to add and lessen energy from our fat reserves so as to keep our body temperature within a degree regardless of the external and internal weather. It learns by repetition. It learns even better if it is not distracted.
The greater our focus, the faster and "cleaner" it learns for us.
"Cleaner" because there is less benefit if what IT learns is confused by a lot of maybe, if, and, and or. What brain STATES are best for this. If we know this, we can assist ourselves to learn faster. If we know this, we can understand HOW and WHEN we are learning in this way which we may have been unaware of. We might be learning something that is self-sabotaging.
Learning by rote is when we consciously repeat something over and over to assist ourselves in learning to "memorize" our multiplication tables, our language, our English class poems, our school play actor's part. A few persons are gifted to be able to simply see something and remember it as if they had photographed it into their memory. Most of us must begin our learning by repetition. In like fashion, complex physical skills are also refined into strength and co-ordination of movement and movements, by repetition, by practice. Yet these FORMS of Reptilian learning include a degree of conscious awareness, supervision, direction. Our Ego and SuperEgo want to believe that THEIR part is important. It IS their contribution. For our Reptilian Structure, it is a distraction. In reality, it enables us to have Choice and take responsibility for WHAT we learn.
Learning WITHOUT Choice.
Is this a good thing? Does this happen? How does it influence us?
When our Reptilian Structure is NOT distracted, and, to the degree that it is exposed to urgencies, IT will learn. We know that we are birthed into this world with a host of automated biological and "instinctual" reactive and responsive patterns. To this we become aware of apparent "hereditary" patterns of behavior. We know that energy blocks are frequently formed through exposure to just ONE traumatic experience or sensitive exposure to a toxic substance or feeling. We also can become aware of many behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes which we learn through imprinting. For many of us, these parts of our "thinking" are so deeply US, that we may assume for a very long time that they are unchangeable, even correct, or bad, depending upon the responses of others to us when we express them. As mentioned elsewhere in this material, we CAN change all of these.
Much of culture is what we learn, without Choice.
We are simply exposed to it. Persons who are well intentioned, and some who are evil ... expose, impress and impose this FORM of learning on us. Much of this "socialized" learning is built into guidelines, limitations, and ideals over a period of many exposures. Yet, is there a faster, more powerful way in which we can assist our Reptilian Structures to learn? Such a way would have to be "clean" ... free of the conscious interference, doubt, and fears of our Ego and SuperEgo.
What are the ways we could do this, safely.
For that element of SAFETY, we would have to be able to Preview and Choose what we wanted to learn first. Then, we could ACCEPT the detail as valued. We could sanction its safety for FREE learning. We could shut off our consciousness to focus our alertness. We could trigger our input, feed in the new info, and lock it in with an anchor. Done. Now, it is automatic in association, recollection, application. It is US!
What are the common known ways to do this?
Some of these FORMATS include parts of one another.
ALL of them include degrees of Choice: initial, continuing, mentored.
Most of us know, consciously, by feedback, or unconsciously ... that the learning we contract to in these ways WILL impact our lives. Our actions, behaviors, and participation WILL be supported by these practices. Their limitations will be bounded by our energy blocks, our imprinting, and, our awareness. If we are unaware of the Choice, we won't attempt it. If we are in denial of our imprinting, we will not question it. If we are strong in pride and unforgiving of our energy blocks, we will be frustrated. Our greatest adversaries, in this area, are OUR ignorance, denial, and pride. The first two are addressed in this material. Whether you choose to be humble and build strength from it will be up to YOU.
Ritual.
A ritual is a sequence of words and/or actions which we repeat.
It can be the preparations we make before going to bed which assists our sleep. It can be the statements we make and movements we take when we enter a building, meet other people, participate in a service of membership, start our car, perform research, do our job, have an argument, watch a movie, check for Spiritual Guidance, perform a routine. Rituals connect us closely with something or someone else. They are a demonstration of and commitment to membership. We are a person who sleeps (when, how long, where). We are a person who respects (the values given to a building, sash, badge, color, signal, sound, ...) what has been agreed upon by others (the culture, authorities, priests, ...).
What is the Purpose?
Rituals are created to provide harmony, orderliness, efficiency.
These are all powerful traits of our Reptilian Structure.
It is the Values we enshrine in our rituals that matter.
Those values may be relevant today; destructive later.
Show care as to what rituals you want to be part of YOU.
They give you Purpose.
What can we apply from this format?
There are Seven characteristics which contribute to the effectiveness of ritual. If we include these in our Fast Track to OUR Future, we will increase our degree of successfulness.
- Respect
- Calm
- Attention
- Listening
- Acceptance
- Participation
- Command
Affirmation.
These are usually short, personally meaningful and significant, statements of value. They bring a value we want into our focus. They make that value more aware to us, more motivating for us, more applicable by us. We use affirmations to provide us with a direction and remove confusion. We use them to modify destructive habits through their replacement with constructive intent. Choose your affirmations for their significance to YOU. There are hundreds of possibilities. If there is no direct application for a specific one in your life, it may only bring you distraction, denial, and a waste of energies and commitment. WHAT you select to be YOUR affirmation is what you are making yourself into.
What can we apply from this format?
There are Four characteristics which contribute to the effectiveness of affirmation. If we include these in our Fast Track to OUR Future, we will increase our degree of successfulness.

Meditation.
There are many different practices which are referred to and taught, as, Meditation. Fundamentally, meditation involves relaxing the mind, away from anxieties, fears, pains, concerns, possibilities ... and stilling our consciousness. It is an attempt, and skill, to and of separating Feeling from Intellect. Too often our intellect is BUSY taking Control of our environment and imposing what we want or believe/intend is best on ourselves and those around us. To become aware of what we have learned to be automatic, and to discern when such is positive or destructive, we must temporarily pause our interaction with it and allow it to take center stage. Now, we can "see" and "feel" those disruptions and contributions. With this new awareness, we have a Choice to accept these learnings and whether to modify them into something more relevant with WHO we want to be, WHERE we want to go, WHAT we want to experience, HOW we want to participate.
Meditation can be ..
Meditation can be facilitated with Reverence.
Meditation can be made easier with Ritual.
Meditation can be more focused with an Affirmation.
Meditation can be made more intense with (Self-)Hypnosis.
The benefits you receive from the meditation you do can be an extension of how well you integrate the different ways we have of powerfully assisting our Reptilian Structure.
What can we apply from this format?

Hypnotism.
Hypnosis can stabilize, modify, and introduce patterns of behavior, and, attitude, which are positive for our Recovery and for our strength of health. It is only effective with persons who can Trust the hypnotist. This form of almost reverential respect can be frustrated by Personality factors, anxieties, fears, energy blocks, and distractions. It can also be enhanced by many of the same factors. The aspect which determines whether the factors are a benefit or a hindrance is our Beliefs. Do we, or will we allow ourselves, to Believe that this person, this method, these statements will be a Benefit for us?
Hypnosis does not take away our choice, nor, allow others to control us. Not quite. We must first sanction THEIR authority to make decisions for us. This may be almost automatic if the other person represents a level of authority we have Accepted. This may be assisted by the mention of a role title, such as "Doctor", or by the visual cues of a uniform (dress), such as a white tunic, certificates on the wall, displays of others (how the person is addressed), the location they are in (medical building), the manner of their presentation (perhaps quiet, calm, constant, confident, encouraging). If we lower our defences and raise our level of acceptance, we can surrender our option of Choice, for the remainder of a "session" to the hypnotist.
Hypnotism involves our conscious (and sometimes unconscious) removal of intellectual participation and a determination to Accept the statements that follow as Accurate and True. If these Values are accepted, there is no interference to stop our Reptilian Structure from simply adopting them as Real. Our Reptilian Structure adapts, responds, and most of all, reacts to reality. Its job and major value is that it can efficiently provide us with solutions which maintain our physical viability, continuance, and safety. OUR future is dependent upon how Fast, and Consistent, it can be. If our heartbeat varies in frequency, without a signaled necessity, it will bring anarchy to hundreds of biochemical processes which depend upon it for their harmony. Here, we use that POWER, to learn something new, quickly, and thoroughly.
What can we apply from this format?

Reverence.
In reverence, we allow ourselves, or put ourselves, into a state of awareness and mind in which we are calm in attention, free of anxieties and fears, open to receive, positive in expectation. The more spiritually strong we are, the easier it is for us to enter and attract this state. The more physically bound we are in our awareness, perceptions and motivations, the more difficult it becomes for us to FEEL this state, remember it, or even accept that it exists and is possible.
Prayer is an Action we take to express
- our appreciation for the benefits in our life,
- our acceptance that we are participants and not gods,
- our faith that there is an orderliness that makes the finite possible,
- to acknowledge the disadvantages we would like to lessen and release,
These are examples of a Feeling of Reverence.
It is this Feeling which ADDS our Power of involvement to our words, and, RECEIVES the Power of the Positive of others into our involvement.
Despair is an Action we take to express
- what we want others to give to us,
- what we believe we have unfairly lost,
- what we envy in the skills of others,
- what we covet of the belongings of others,
- what we desire yet are too lazy to earn,
- what ever ....
Too often, we allow our personal Satan ("adversary of God/Love") to taint our prayers with TALK which separates and isolates us from others. It puts us in opposition to others and in competition with them. It affirms to us that we are, and intend to be and remain, by ourselves, losing, defeated, abused, victimized, vengeful, and hateful. Choose carefully HOW you pray. It will contribute to what you Receive and what you lose, through Denial.
What can we apply from this format?
There are FOUR characteristics which contribute to the effectiveness of Reverence. If we include these in our Fast Track to OUR Future, we will increase our degree of successfulness.

ALL of the above formats use Language.
Some are more language intensive than others, yet all are participated in by an understanding of concepts and beliefs which have been, or can be, expressed in words. Some of these formats are spoken out, some are rehearsed silently, and, some can be variations of either and can fluctuate back and forth between the two. Yet ALL depend upon how we repeatedly, and consistently, express what we feel and think. We know that we have a CHOICE as to WHAT values we put into those formats. We can choose the format. We can choose the Message. We can choose how Strong we want the skill to be. It IS a skill because we take something which is raw and weak and build it into something which is Strong, and automatic. Those aspects make it a foundation on which we are building our Future.
Our degree of HEALTH depends upon our Foundation.
That Foundation includes how Loving we are of Ourselves.
Life is Participation: dynamic and moving ... Active!
Death is being absent: still and hard ... like a rock.
Dis-ease is being alive, yet acting as if one were dead.
Are we living a Strong LIFE, or, a weak DEATH?
Our LANGUAGE counts!

Active language can insure that you maintain a path towards Recovery. It can be a tool which reminds you every day that there is Hope and that you CAN and Will make the journey up the mountain and back to the base. It is from base camp that mountaineers go on to the rest of their lives. It is from their RETURN that they are inspired to do wondrous things in a life that was LESS before than before their challenge. Struggling to the Peak is often a struggle to come to terms with the possible reality of death. Learning to cope with that challenge sets the survivor of CFS-ME apart from the regular population as much as a climber of the Matterhorn or of K2 or of Everest.
There are parallels between the mountain climber and the CFS-ME person.
- A Commitment to do something different.
- A necessity to gather Resources before beginning.
- An importance of finding & building a good TEAM.
- A respect for and knowledge of the mountain.
- A strategy which enables plans to adapt to reality.
- Many others who live in denial, fear, passivity.
Getting to the Top is NOT the end.
For those who Recover and Live, it is a turning point.
It is when extreme efforts to ADVANCE change to extreme efforts to consolidate. Persons with CFS-ME often make short "recoveries" only to fall off ledges, fall into crevasses, suffer broken equipment, sprain an ankle or wrist, succumb to rapid changing weather conditions, suffer lack of oxygen access, become overwhelmed by biological failings, trigger avalanches onto themselves, doubt themselves or their team, or, lose their will to live through overspent libido.
Many climbers of the highest mountains reach the top and die on the way down. Why?
Pride.
Exhaustion.
Environment.
Personality.
Libido.
Pride.
Believing that YOU can Control the mountain, is Pride.
Believing that YOU are stronger than the weather, is Pride.
Believing that YOU are enough without a good team, is Pride.
Believing that YOU can do it just because someone else has, is Pride.
Believing that YOU are the center of attention, is Pride.
Pride is not only selfish. It is foolish.
It is an ignorance that sabotages.
Be humble, and Learn.
Exhaustion.
Exhaustion is mandated when we fail to Rest adequately.
Exhaustion is encouraged when we Push and Disrespect ourselves.
Exhaustion is invited when we Do, or Not, because of Others.
Exhaustion is a reality of CFS-ME.
Don't avoid or ignore it.
Deal with it!
Environment.
Environment surrounds us.
We adapt to it, or suffer from it.
We can know the climate, or, wing it.
We can set our limits for degree of exposure.
We can choose to bask in the sun, yet not to burn.
We can choose to add layers of protection to keep us warm.
We can choose to invest resources to benefit, not whim.
We can choose to shelter ourselves from storm.
We can choose to build a strong base camp.
We can choose to climb towards the light.
We can choose to rest from darkness.
We can choose to be careful of melts.
Win or lose, it will be how we Choose.
Personality.
Everyone has Gifts and Weaknesses.
Within us, they are fundamentally the same.
Weaknesses are tools we leave dull, unused.
Gifts are tools we sharpen and become proficient with.
It is foolish climbers who are ignorant of their tools.
It is successful climbers who masters their tools.
Knowledge can transform rock into leverage.
Experience can transform rock into support.
Three point contact is ideal.
Rocks will fall
Duck them!
Libido.
A plan.
A purpose.
All ready to go!
We know the route.
We have the tools & team.
We must reach the summit.
We want the thrill of completion.
We can do it with respect for God.
Going up, or, coming down.
Together we can do it.
One step at a time.
If you choose to conquer the Peak of CFS-ME, set your sights on the Life ahead. Yes, you will have to deal with the Now, yet, the Now will only take you to the Peak. It is the successful descent back down to Reality, from a world which can only be a fantasy to non climbers, which will REVEAL your Success. Giving up the struggle when your Package of Illness has been defined, treated, and forced and encouraged to leave, be defeated, or, surrender is a severe danger, a hazard. It places you back where you were before you started the climb. It says to you and the rest of the world that you made the climb, for nothing! IF the climb was to be of any worth and value, then what did you learn from it? What BENEFITS did all of the efforts, planning, and teamwork bring to you?
Consider these..
Charity.
How many people have been there to cheer you on?
If you have had many, you can appreciate how important that has been for you. Imagine not having anyone available for you to share with. Imagine being told many times daily by everyone whom you came in contact with that you were foolish, weak, never going to recover. That IS, the reality for many people with CFS-ME. You could change that. If you have had better, you can share the Reality of CFS-ME with others ... in as little or much detail as they are interested in. Perhaps just direct them to this material or let them know that it exists, should they ever have a need for it. YOU can bring Hope to a world of Despair. Helping others to be what they can best be, is Charity.
Love.
To many people and in many cultures, the concept of "Love" carries many meanings and values. Each of these includes a confirmation of a relationship to one or more other people. The context of that relationship may be by choice, heredity, personal experience, culture, religion, or peer group. With CFS-ME, you have been given an opportunity to identify with others who are greatly in need of love. They have often given and shared love in their pre-CFS-ME endeavours. Through misunderstandings and the afflictions of many illness factors which brought CFS-ME to them, they have sacrificed much of their physical, social, intimate, and political energies during their illness towards just staying alive. You can ignite compassion in others through your sharing of understanding.
Persistence.
If you have had CFS-ME for longer than 9 months, you have had an opportunity to act with persistence. You will likely have been encouraged to try to exercise, maintain your workload, take drugs, penalize yourself, and to be paranoid about all manner of possible conspiracies. You may have felt the challenge to become hateful, violent, and vengeful. Death of your lifestyle, your Self, and your relationships is a possible concern which may have visited your door. If you are reading this, you have not accepted all of the destructive negativity which may have come your way. You have continued to look for answers when they seemed nowhere, and, everywhere. You have continued to make an effort to understand what you have and where you can go with it. Healthy people living through this increasingly complex historical time will more often reach points of success through their continued efforts, persistence, to move forward. YOU have become part of that select group.
Faith.
Many of us have been encouraged to replace Faith with Intellect before we acquired CFS-ME or some other serious and lengthy health challenge. We have been "educated" to accept the cultural commandments of our academic, political, and peer experts. They have preached to us about the superiority of the human mind over the irrelevancy of archaic religious rituals and the abuses of earlier systems of human authority.
Science has been packaged by the idealism of the inexperienced to appear absolute, all knowing, and dependable ... a god it was never believed to be by any who understood it. With CFS-ME, you will have encountered many of the stark failures of this belief. Much of the "science" associated with CFS-ME is inconclusive, disconnected, insular, rejected by medical authorities, and, unsupported by political leadership. To continue forward against a backward flow of intolerance and pride will have taken a special strength which originates beyond the physical and the human. That, is Faith.
Hope.
If a person can survive for many years with the weight of many illnesses, each of which continue to end the lives of many both earlier and today, it is possible to find a way to use that strength to find a way to float that boat again. The fact is, you were once like a boat that motored and sailed upon calm seas, through rolling waves, and over roller coaster rushes of swift and dangerous waters.
Life was your voyage.
You set your heading and made your way with toil and joy to the port of your choice. Your lowered or raised your sails to temper your speed. You anchored for periods of rest. You tied up to docks in harbors and took on supplies and delivered goods that others were so thankful for. You maintained your hull, your sails, your charts and your motors and appliances against the wear of daily use, accidents, and age.
There were breakages, leaks, and threats of rot.
You fixed them and floated onward. You may even have experienced a grounding or a time in dry dock with your ship, yet, you survived. Now, your ship had been dashed upon hidden rocks during a horrendous storm. It has many repairs to be done. Don't panic! You can repair them, one at a time. If you take the time to make stable repairs before refloating, your ship will be stronger than ever.
You KNOW this.
YOU can do this!
Actions, YOUR actions, will speak louder than words.
And, the WORDS you use will be your daily sunshine, or, tempest.
To survive, DO your best; Leave the rest.
Throughout, COUNT your blessings.
