Barium is a silvery-white metal that can be found in the environment, where it exists naturally.
It occurs combined with other chemicals, such as sulfur, carbon or oxygen.
It is very light and its density is half that of iron.
Barium oxidizes in air, reacts vigoroulsy with water to form the hydroxide, liberating hydrogen.
Barium reacts with almost all the non-metals, forming often poisouning compounds.
Applications
Barium is often used in barium-nickel alloys for spark-plug electrodes and in vacuum tubes as drying and oxygen-removing agent. It is also used in fluorescent lamps: impure barium sulfide phosphoresces after exposure to the light.
Barium sulfate is an image highlighter used in diagnostic testing.
It is a radiopaque agent, which means it offers a contrast between organ tissues during an X-ray. The Mayo Clinic, in an article about "Barium Sulfate," states, "The contrast will help the doctor see any special conditions that may exist in that organ or part of the body." Barium sulfate is given by mouth in the form or tablets or liquids or as an enema.
Barium compounds are used by the oil and gas industries to make drilling mud.
Drilling mud simplifies drilling through rocks by lubricating the drill.
Barium compounds are also used to make paint, bricks, tiles, glass, and rubber.
Barium nitrate and clorate give fireworks a green colour.
Barium compounds, including barium sulfate and barium carbonate, are used in the plastics, rubber, electronics and textile industries, in ceramic glazes and enamels, in glass-making, brick-making and paper-making, as a lubricant additive, in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, in case-hardening of steel and in the oil and gas industry as a wetting agent for drilling mud (Miner, 1969; Brooks, 1986).
Barium in the environment
Barium is surprisingly abundant in the Earth's crust, being the 14th most abundant element.
High amounts of barium may only be found in soils and in food, such as nuts, seaweed, fish and certain plants.
Because of the extensive use of barium in the industries, human activities add greatly to the release of barium in the environment. As a result barium concentrations in air, water and soil may be higher than naturally occurring concentrations on many locations. Barium is generally present in air in particulate form as a result of industrial emissions, particularly from combustion of coal and diesel oil and waste incineration.
Barium in water comes primarily from natural sources.
The acetate, nitrate and halides are soluble in water, but the carbonate, chromate, fluoride, oxalate, phosphate and sulfate are quite insoluble. The solubility of barium compounds increases as the pH level decreases (US EPA, 1985a).
The highest levels to be found in drinking-water are likely to be associated with groundwater of low pH from granite-like igneous rocks, alkaline igneous and volcanic rocks and manganese-rich sedimentary rocks. Concentrations are, therefore, expected to be relatively stable.
Organic barium compounds are ionic and are hydrolysed in water (Cotton & Wilkinson, 1980).
The concentration of barium ions in natural aquatic systems is limited by the presence of naturally occurring anions and possibly also by the adsorption of these ions onto metal oxides and hydroxides (Hem, 1959).
Barium enters the air during mining processes, refining processes, and during the production of barium compounds. It can also enter the air during coal and oil combustion.
The chief mined ores are barite, which is also the most common and witserite.
The main mining areas are UK, Italy, Czech Republic, USA and Germany.
Each year about 6 million tonnes are produced and reserves are expected to exceed 400 million tonnes.

Barium in Drinking-water
Background document for development of WHO
Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality
WHO/SDE/WSH/03.04/76 --- World Health Organization 2004
Soluble barium salts are most readily absorbed, although insoluble compounds may also be absorbed to a significant extent (McCauley & Washington, 1983; Clavel et al., 1987). The degree of absorption of barium from the gastrointestinal tract also depends on the animal species, the contents of the gastrointestinal tract, diet and age (Taylor et al., 1962; McCauley & Washington, 1983; Clavel et al., 1987). Data on gastrointestinal absorption in humans are limited to a study conducted by Lisk et al. (1988); in this mass balance study of one man consuming a single dose of 179.2 mg of barium in 92 g of Brazil nuts, it was estimated that at least 91% of the dose was absorbed (List et al., 1988; US EPA, 1999). ...
The faecal route of excretion of barium is the most important in humans and animals (Ohanian & Lappenbusch, 1983); in humans, 20% of an ingested dose is excreted in the faeces and 7% in the urine within 24 h (US NRC, 1977; IPCS, 1990).
At high concentrations, barium causes vasoconstriction by its direct stimulation of arterial muscle, peristalsis as a result of the violent stimulation of smooth muscles and convulsions and paralysis following stimulation of the central nervous system (Stockinger, 1981). Depending on the dose and solubility of the barium salt, death may occur in a few hours or a few days.
The acute toxic oral dose is between 3 and 4 g (Reeves, 1986). Repeated exposures to barium chloride in table salt are believed to have caused recurrent outbreaks of “pa-ping” disease (a transient paralysis resembling familial periodic paralysis) in China (Shankle & Keane, 1988), but recovery was usually rapid (IPCS, 1990). ...
Associations between the barium content of drinking-water and mortality from cardiovascular disease have been observed in several ecological epidemiological studies. Significant negative correlations between barium concentrations in drinking-water and mortality from atherosclerotic heart disease (Schroeder & Kramer, 1974) and total cardiovascular disease (Elwood et al., 1974) have been reported. Conversely, significantly higher sex- and age-adjusted death rates for “all cardiovascular diseases” and “heart disease” have been reported in an unspecified number of Illinois communities with high concentrations of barium in drinking-water (2–10 mg/litre) compared with those with low concentrations (< 0.2 mg/litre) in 1971–1975 (Brenniman et al., 1979).
There were, however, several confounding factors; although the communities were matched for demographic characteristics and socioeconomic status, population mobility differed between the communities with high and low barium levels. Moreover, it was not possible to control for the use of water softeners in the home (US NRC, 1982). A retrospective morbidity study was reported by Brenniman & Levy (1985) on two Illinois communities, McHenry and West Dundee, which had similar demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, but a 70-fold difference in barium concentrations in drinking-water. The mean barium concentration in McHenry’s drinking-water was 0.1 mg/litre, whereas the mean concentration in West Dundee’s drinking-water was 7.3 mg/litre. ... The authors concluded that blood pressure in adults does not appear to be adversely affected, even following prolonged ingestion of drinking-water containing more than 7 mg of barium per litre.
In a clinical study, 11 “healthy” men were administered 1.5 litres of distilled drinking-water containing various levels of barium chloride per day. Barium concentrations in drinking-water that the subjects had been drinking prior to the study were known to be very low. The first 2 weeks of the trial served as a control period, and no barium was added to the water. For the ensuing 4 weeks, 5 mg of barium per litre (equivalent to 0.11 mg of barium per kg of body weight per day using a reference body weight of 70 kg) were added, and 10 mg of barium per litre (0.21 mg of barium per kg of body weight per day) were added for the final 4 weeks of the study (Wones et al., 1990). ... No consistent indication of any adverse effects was found. There was, however, a trend towards an increase in serum calcium between 0 and 5 mg/litre, which persisted at 10 mg/litre; for total calcium, normalized for differences in albumin level, this increase was statistically significant, but this was not considered to be clinically significant (IPCS, 2001). ...
As there is no evidence that barium is carcinogenic (IPCS, 1990), the guideline value for barium in drinking-water is derived using the TDI approach. Barium has been shown to cause nephropathy in laboratory animals, but the toxicological end-point of greatest concern to humans at the relatively low concentrations encountered in the environment appears to be the potential effect on blood pressure. ...

EPA. 1989.
The amount of barium that is detected in food and water usually is not high enough to become a health concern.
People with the greatest risk to barium exposure with additional health effects are those that work in the barium industry.
Most of the health risks that they can undergo are caused by breathing in air that contains barium sulphate or barium carbonate.
Many hazardous waste sites contain certain amounts of barium.
People that live near them may be exposed to harmful levels.
The exposure will than be caused by breathing dust, eating soil or plants, or drinking water that is polluted with barium. Skin contact may also occur.
Most foods contain less than 0.002 mg of barium per g (Gormican, 1970).
Some cereal products and nuts may contain high levels: e.g., bran flakes, 0.0039 mg/g; pecans, 0.0067 mg/g; and Brazil nuts, up to 4 mg/g (Mertz, 1986).
About 54% of the barium dose is protein bound.
Barium is known to activate the secretion of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla without prior calcium deprivation.
It may displace calcium from the cell membranes, thereby increasing permeability and providing stimulation to muscles.
Eventual paralysis of the central nervous system can occur (Beliles 1994).
The health effects of barium depend upon the water-solubility of the compounds.
Barium compounds that dissolve in water can be harmful to human health.
The uptake of very large amounts of barium that are water-soluble may cause paralyses and in some cases even death.
Small amounts of water-soluble barium may cause a person to experience
- breathing difficulties,
- increased blood pressures,
- heart rhythm changes,
- stomach irritation,
- muscle weakness,
- changes in nerve reflexes,
- swelling of brains and liver,
- kidney and heart damage.
Barium has not shown to cause cancer with humans.
There is no proof that barium can cause infertility or birth defects.
The soluble salts of barium, an alkaline earth metal, are toxic in mammalian systems.
They are absorbed rapidly from the gastrointestinal tract and are deposited in the muscles, lungs, and bone.
Barium is excreted primarily in the feces.
At low doses, barium acts as a muscle stimulant and at higher doses affects the nervous system eventually leading to paralysis. Acute and subchronic oral doses of barium cause
- vomiting
- diarrhea, followed by
- decreased heart rate and
- elevated blood pressure.
Higher doses result in
- cardiac irregularities,
- weakness,
- tremors,
- anxiety, and
- dyspnea.
A drop in serum potassium may account for some of the symptoms.
Death can occur from cardiac and respiratory failure.
Acute doses around 0.8 grams can be fatal to humans.
A number of accidental barium poisonings have occurred following the ingestion of barium salts.
The estimated fatal dose of barium carbonate, a rodenticide, is about 5 grams for a 70 kg human (Arena 1979). The LD50 for barium chloride is estimated at about 1 gram for a 70 kg human (Machata 1988), and the LDLo (lowest published lethal dose) is reported to be about 0.8 grams (Lewis and Sweet 1984).
The acute symptoms include
- excess salivation,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea,
- increased blood pressure,
- muscular tremors,
- weakness,
- paresis,
- anxiety,
- dyspnea, and
- cardiac irregularities.
Magnesium and sodium sulfate are antidotal if taken soon after ingestion since either salt will result in the formation of insoluble barium sulfate and prevent further absorption. Survival for more than 24 hours is usually followed by complete recovery (Arena 1979).
A family was accidentally poisoned with barium from eating their evening meal.
The mother had fried fish breaded with a flour-like substance that turned out to be rat poison containing barium carbonate. All seven family members, aged 2 to 48 years, developed
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea, and
- crampy abdominal pain
within minutes of consuming the meal;
the parents also developed
- ventricular tachycardia,
- flaccid paralysis of the extremities,
- shortness of breath (mother), and
- respiratory failure (father).
Patients were treated symptomatically and all fully recovered (Johnson and VanTassell 1991).
Subchronic and chronic oral or inhalation exposure primarily affects the cardiovascular system resulting in elevated blood pressure. A lowest-observed-adverse-effect level (LOAEL) of 0.51 mg barium/kg/day based on increased blood pressure was observed in chronic oral rat studies (Perry et al. 1983), whereas human studies identified a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 0.21 mg barium/kg/day (Wones et al. 1990, Brenniman and Levy 1984). ... In the Wones et al. study, ... No clinically significant effects were observed. An epidemiological study was conducted by Brenniman and Levy ... No significant individual differences were seen; however, a significantly higher mortality rate from all combined cardiovascular diseases was observed with the higher barium level in the 65+ age group. The average barium concentration was 7.3 mg/L, which corresponds to a dose of 0.20 mg/kg/day. Confidence in the oral RfD is rated medium by the EPA.
Subchronic and chronic inhalation exposure of human populations to barium-containing dust can result in a benign pneumoconiosis called “baritosis.” This condition is often accompanied by an elevated blood pressure but does not result in a change in pulmonary function. Exposure to an air concentration of 5.2 mg barium carbonate/m3 for 4 hours/day for 6 months has been reported to result in elevated blood pressure and decreased body weight gain in rats (Tarasenko et al. 1977). Reproduction and developmental effects were also observed. Increased fetal mortality was seen after untreated females were mated with males exposed to 5.2 mg/m3 of barium carbonate. ...

Ba-en.htm#Environmental%20effects%20of%20barium
Some barium compounds that are released during industrial processes dissolve easily in water and are found in lakes, rivers, and streams. Because of their water-solubility these barium compounds can spread over great distances. When fish and other aquatic organisms absorb the barium compounds, barium will accumulate in their bodies.
Because it forms insoluble salts with other common components of the environment, such as carbonate and sulphate, barium is not mobile and poses little risk. Barium compounds that are persistent usually remain in soil surfaces, or in the sediment of water soils. Barium is found in most land soils at low levels. These levels may be higher at hazardous waste sites.

Notes from a Urine Element Analysis, Accession Number: 577724, Date: 2017-08-20
Provided by Rocky Mountain Analytical, Calgary, AB T3R 0H9
Urine is not the principal route of excretion for barium; probably less than 10% of barium absorbed by mouth is excreted in urine, with most barium excreted in feces. Therefore the clinical relevancy of urine barium is not clear. The amount excreted can vary over a wide range, without reflecting a significant change in body burden.
Barium sulphate, the kind of barium used in imaging studies of the GI tract (e.g. barium enema, barium meal, barium swallow), is not absorbable by mouth. Barium components which are water soluable are normally found in small amounts in many different foods however, so some barium is expected to be present in the body.
Brazil nuts, peanuts and peanut butter are quite high in barium.
It would be extremely difficult to develop any sort of toxicity from soluable barium in food, due to the low levels present.
Groundwater in some areas may contain high levels of soluable barium.
Non-absorbable barium compounds are also used as fillers in plastics intended for food storage.
Note that barium sulphate contrast agents are supposedly not absorbed into the body, but these may contain small amounts of other barium compounds which can be absorbed.
Gastric acid may solubilize small amounts of barium sulphate.
Some individuals may therefore show increased barium excretion in urine following barium GI X-Rays.
There is at least one report of a fatality following intravention of barium sulphate contrast.
Fatal poisoning due to intravention after oral administration of barium sulphate for contrast radiology.
(Forensic Science International, 1999:108: 109-113).
It is also possible that individuals with "leaky gut" might show elevated barium following radiographic investigations in which barium is used, either due to soluable barium component, or due to intravasection of barium sulphate.
Barium is widely used in industry, in the manufacture of alloys, glass, cement, ceramics, flares, and fireworks, paper, lubricating oil, magnets, inks, and paint. Arc welding electrodes may contain barium, in a form which is absorbable if inhaled.
Barium competes with potassium and can affect cardiac rhythm via interference with the Ne-K ATPase pump.
Soluable barium compounds are quite toxic if given in high enough oral or intravenous doses.
Death is by respiratory paralysis and cardiac arrhmia.
There are no reports of toxic effects from chronic ingestion of nonlethal amounts of soluable barium.

Barium exposure can happen through a number of channels including occupational exposure, groundwater contamination, environmental pollution, cigarette smoke, and even certain medical procedures. In my opinion, industrial use is perhaps of the largest concern due to the potential for massive environmental pollution.
... flat-panel televisions.
They have become very popular and celebrity-fascination coupled with ever-dropping price points are a likely indicator that their prevalence will continue. Televisions, old and new, contain chemicals and toxic metals. According to UC Davis’ Department of Chemical Engineering, the list of toxins included with most televisions includes arsenic, barium, cadmium, lead, and mercury (and programming that is overwhelmingly void-of-thought). When televisions are improperly disposed of, environmental and groundwater contamination can be an extremely serious problem. In the past 5 years, how many people do you know who have replaced an old television with a new one? We’ve heard that television can be bad for the brain but the potential environmental and public health impact from leaky television disposal really gives that idea a new meaning.
... cigarettes, the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health have reported that cigarette smokers have higher levels of chemicals and toxic metals, including cadmium, lead, and barium.
Barium salts can improve x-ray imaging and certain radiological procedures require that patients drink a barium sulfate beverage; perhaps you or someone you know have been lucky enough to receive a barium enema prior to a colon x-ray? ...
Regular barium exposure has even been fingered as a potential contributor in the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis.
Addressing Barium Exposure Concerns
Barium levels in the body can be measured through bone, blood, feces or urine samples.
However, tests cannot determine the duration or level of barium exposure.
If you’re concerned with the negative effects of barium or other chemical and toxic metal exposure, I recommend taking a personal inventory of your life to determine your exposure risks. Are you drinking purified water? Are you consuming organic foods that are free of pesticides? Do you live in an area more susceptible to industrial contamination? Are you cleansing your body? These are just a few things to consider. Once you’ve identified the sources of toxins, you can work on removing them from your life.

Authored by Dr Laurence Knott, 27 Nov 2015
The barium meal, barium swallow and barium enema are tests that help doctors examine the digestive system.
Barium is a white, ‘radio-opaque’ powder that is not transparent to x-rays or other forms of radiation.
It is used to show up the organs of the digestive system during x-ray.
Barium tests allow a radiologist to evaluate a wide range of problems, including areas of reflux, narrowing or ulceration to the digestive tract. Other tests such as endoscopy or computerised tomography (CT) scan are now more commonly used than the barium test to examine the digestive tract.
X-rays use invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs on film for diagnostic purposes. X-rays pass through body tissues onto specially-treated plates (similar to camera film) and a "negative" type picture is made (the more solid a structure is, the whiter it appears on the film).
Fluoroscopy is often used during a barium enema.
Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures — similar to an X-ray "movie."
A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined, and is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail. In a barium enema, fluoroscopy allows the radiologist to see the movement of the barium through the large intestine as it is instilled through the rectum.
Barium is an X-ray absorber and appears white on X-ray film.
When instilled via the rectum, barium coats the inside wall of the large intestine.
This allows for visualization of the inner wall lining, as well as the size, shape, contour, and patency of the colon.
This process shows differences that might not be seen on standard X-rays.
Barium is used only for diagnostic studies of the GI tract.
The use of barium with standard X-rays contributes to the visibility of various characteristics of the large intestine.
Some abnormalities of the large intestine that may be detected by a barium enema include tumors, inflammation, polyps (growths), diverticula (pouches), obstructions, and changes in the intestinal structure.
After the instillation of barium into the rectum, the radiologist may also fill the large intestine with air.
Air will appear black on X-ray film, contrasting with barium's white image.
The use of the 2 substances, barium and air, is called a double contrast study.
The purpose of using 2 contrast substances is to achieve an enhancement of the inside wall lining of the large intestine.
As the air expands the large intestine (like blowing up a balloon), a barium coating is formed on the inner surface of the colon wall. This technique enhances visualization by sharpening the outline of the inner surface layer of the large intestine. The benefit of this technique is to show smaller surface abnormalities in the large intestine.
Barium swallows and enemas
Barium (barium sulphate) powder is mixed with water and can be swallowed (flavouring may be added) or introduced as an enema through a tube inserted into the rectum. The mixture passes quickly into your digestive tract and its progress is followed by taking x-rays over different periods of time, depending on which part of your digestive tract the doctor wants to observe.
All images are generated using a special type of x-ray machine called a fluoroscope, which projects images onto a video screen.
A barium swallow is used to help diagnose swallowing or reflux problems.
It literally allows the doctor to watch your swallowing motion.
It is also used to examine your oesophagus.
A barium enema is used to diagnose problems affecting your large bowel.
Small intestine enema
This test is similar to a barium follow through.
However, instead of drinking the barium liquid, a thin tube is passed down your gullet (oesophagus), through the stomach and into the first part of the small intestine. Barium liquid is then poured down the tube. This test is not commonly done but can give some different information about the small intestine to the tests above.
Problems that may be diagnosed with barium tests
By looking at the x-rays, the doctor is able to see a wide range of problems including:
- Abnormal shape of the digestive tract
- Areas where the digestive tract has become narrow
- Ulceration
- Damage to the digestive tract lining.
What are the reasons for a barium enema?
A barium enema may be performed to diagnose structural or functional abnormalities of the large intestine, including the rectum. These abnormalities may include, but are not limited to:
- abdominal pain,
- blood in your stools,
- chronic diarrhea,
- rectal bleeding,
- a twisted loop of the bowels (volvulus),
- unexplained weight loss,
- obstructions and polyps (growths),
- unusual bloating or lower abdominal pain,
- Changes in bowel movements.
--- Such as chronic diarrhea or constipation, or passing of blood, mucus, and/or pus,
- Colorectal cancer
- Crohn's disease. Ulcerations and inflammation occurring in any part of the GI tract (mouth to anus).
- Diverticulitis,
- Irritable bowel syndrome,
- Ulcerative colitis. Ulcerations and inflammation of the large intestine.
There may be other reasons for your doctor to recommend a barium enema.
Issues to consider with barium tests
Before the procedure, you need to discuss a range of issues with your doctor including:
Bowel habits – if you are constipated, you will be given a laxative the night before the barium meal.
For the enema you will be given a specific diet and laxatives to ensure the bowel is clear. Y
ou will probably need to take the laxatives for two days before the test.
Eating – you are not allowed to eat or drink anything for eight hours before the test.
The x-rays will be easier to read if there are no food particles in the digestive tract.
Health conditions – tell your doctor if you have insulin dependent diabetes, so that you can decide together the best time for you to fast and have the test.
Pregnancy – pregnant women should not have these tests.
Possible complications of barium tests
Barium examinations are safe tests, but complications can sometimes occur. These may include:
- If a section of the digestive tract has an undiagnosed break or split (perforation), the barium meal may leak into the abdominal cavity.
- If the bowel is obstructed, the barium can become impacted.
-
The barium can lodge in the appendix and cause appendicitis.
-
\There may be side effects (such as blurred vision) from the drugs used during the test.
- It is possible to accidentally breathe in the barium meal instead of swallowing it (this is very rare).
Perforation.
If it’s possible you have a tear, also called a perforation, in your colon, your doctor may opt for a contrast solution with iodine in it. This solution causes fewer potential complications if it leaks out of your colon.
Radiation Toxicity:
You may want to ask your doctor about the amount of radiation used during the procedure and the risks related to your particular situation. It's a good idea to keep a record of your past history of radiation exposure, such as previous scans and other types of X-rays, so that you can inform your health care provider. Risks associated with radiation exposure may be related to the cumulative number of X-ray examinations and/or treatments over a long period of time.
Patients who are allergic to or sensitive to medications, contrast media, iodine, or latex should notify their health care provider.
Constipation or fecal impaction may occur if the barium isn't completely eliminated from the body.
Risks of barium enema may include, but are not limited to:
There may be other risks depending on your specific medical condition.
Be sure to discuss any concerns with your doctor prior to the procedure.
The day before the exam:
Step 1. Have only clear liquids for the entire day.
Drinking lots of clear liquids is a very important part of the preparation. Clear liquids include:
Water
Clear juices - no pulp (apple, white grape, white cranberry)
Bouillon soup or clear broth
Plain Jell-O (no cream, fruit or other additive)
Coffee or tea without milk or creamer
Step 2. At 5 p.m. drink a 10 ounce bottle of magnesium citrate.
Have additional clear fluids throughout the evening. Drink a minimum of four 8 ounce glasses of clear liquid.
Magnesium citrate is available at any pharmacy.
Step 3. At 9 p.m. take two (2) bisacodyl tablets with at least one full glass of water.
Do not crush or chew tablets. Bisacodyl tablets are available at any pharmacy.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have a colostomy or illiostomy, do not complete this step.
You should instead continue to have clear liquids.
The day of the exam:
Continue to follow clear liquid diet until the examination is complete.
Use one bisacodyl rectal suppository 90 minutes prior to leave home for your test.
A bowel movement should occur within 30 minutes. Bisacodyl suppositories are available at any pharmacy.
Bring a list of all your medications including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements.
Barium test procedure
In many barium tests, you may be given an injection to relax your muscles.
This may be given directly into a vein (IV) or into your muscles (IM).
This will help with the cramping feeling and provide a better test result.
The radiologist may ask you if you have glaucoma, in which case this drug is not recommended and an alternative may be used.
You will be asked by the radiographer to stand or lie in a number of different positions while x-rays are taken.
The x-ray machine is linked to a television monitor and photographs or video footage can be taken if necessary.
Generally, the procedure takes around 20 minutes.
Sometimes you may need to have follow-up x-rays.
In some cases, several x-rays may be required, over 3 to 6 hours, in order to examine the small intestine and colon (large bowel).
Barium swallow – procedure
You may be asked to swallow the barium so the doctor can observe your swallowing.
You may also be asked to swallow barium with your head tilted (head down) on the x-ray machine to help the doctor understand how your oesophagus works.
In some barium meals, the drink is fizzy because it contains ingredients that cause gas.
This gas helps to expand your stomach and duodenum. (You may have to resist the urge to burp.)
You may have to swallow other substances to create this gas.
So that the barium coats all around the lining of the stomach, the doctor doing the test (radiologist) may do one or more of the following:
Ask you to swallow some bicarbonate powder and citric acid before swallowing the barium.
These 'fizz up' when they mix in the stomach and make some gas. (You may have to resist the urge to burp.)
The gas expands the stomach and duodenum and also pushes the barium to coat the lining of the stomach and duodenum.
This makes the X-ray pictures much clearer. It is the shape and contours of the lining of the stomach and duodenum which need to be seen most clearly on the pictures.
Ask you to turn over on to your stomach on the couch. Various X-ray pictures may be taken whilst you are in different positions.
The gas allows the barium to coat the inside of your stomach so the radiologist can get a clear view of the stomach lining.
Barium enema – procedure
The barium sulphate goes into the bowel through a tube inserted into the rectum.
The fluid is moved around your large bowel while the radiologist watches using x-ray fluoroscopy.
Some barium may be drained and then replaced with air by the radiologist.
This is so the whole of the large bowel can be viewed and any changes caused by your condition can be seen.
This can be difficult or embarrassing, as you may experience cramps or flatulence (farting).
Another Procedural Perspective.
A barium enema may be performed on an outpatient basis or as part of your stay in a hospital.
Procedures may vary depending on your condition and your doctor's practices.
Generally, a barium enema will follow this process:
- You'll be asked to remove any jewelry, eye glasses, or other metal objects that may interfere with the procedure.
- You will be asked to remove your clothing, and you'll be given a gown to wear.
- You will be positioned horizontally on the examination table in a side-lying position.
- A lubricated rectal tube will be inserted into the rectum to allow the barium to flow into the intestine.
- The barium will be allowed to flow slowly into the intestine.
You may experience cramping in the lower abdominal area as the barium is instilled.
To lessen the discomfort, it may be helpful to take slow deep breaths.
- You may feel the need to have a bowel movement.
It will be important to resist the urge to prevent the barium from leaking back out.
At the appropriate time, you'll be given a bedpan or assisted to the bathroom as needed.
- During the procedure, the machine and examination table will move and you may be asked to assume various positions as the X-rays are being taken.
- The radiologist will take single pictures, a series of X-rays, or a video (fluoroscopy) as the barium moves through the intestine.
-
If a double contrast study is ordered, you'll be asked to evacuate some of the barium.
A bedpan or access to a bathroom will be provided. Some barium will remain in your intestine.
Air is injected via the rectum in order to expand the large intestine, and more X-rays will be taken.
- Once all required X-rays have been taken, you'll be assisted from the table.
After the barium test
After the procedure, you can expect:
- Constipation
- Light-coloured faeces
- Flatulence (depending on the examination)
- Blurred vision, if you have been given a muscle relaxant – you should not drive until your vision returns to normal.
Following the examination, some barium will be expelled immediately.
You'll be assisted to the bathroom or given a bedpan.
You may resume your normal diet and activities after a barium enema, unless your doctor advises you differently.
Barium may cause constipation or possible impaction after the procedure if it isn't completely eliminated from your body.
You may be advised to drink plenty of fluids and eat foods high in fiber to expel the barium from the body.
You may also be given a cathartic or laxative to help expel the barium.
Since barium isn't (usually) absorbed into the body but passes through your entire gastrointestinal tract, your bowel movements may be lighter in color until all the barium has been excreted.
The long and rigorous bowel preparation prior to the procedure may cause fatigue afterward. You should rest as needed.
You may experience soreness of the anus and rectum due to the bowel preparation.
Your doctor may recommend the application of a soothing ointment to the area.
If you have difficulty or pain with bowel movements, fever, or rectal bleeding, call your doctor.
If you do not have a bowel movement for two days after the exam or are unable to pass gas, call your doctor
Notify your health care provider to report any of the following:
Difficulty with bowel movements or inability to have a bowel movement
Pain and/or distention of the abdomen
Stools that are smaller in diameter than normal
Fever
Rectal bleeding
Certain factors or conditions may interfere with the accuracy of a barium enema procedure.
These factors include, but are not limited to:
- Recent barium swallow or upper GI procedure that may interfere with the X-ray exposure of the lower GI area
- Colon spasm
- Stool in the bowel
Self-care after a barium test
Be advised by your doctor, but general suggestions include:
- Barium can cause constipation, so it is best to drink plenty of fluids for at least one full day following the test.
- Eat more fruit than usual for the next day or two to help move your bowels.
- See your doctor if you haven’t had a bowel motion within three days.
Other tests
Other tests are now more commonly used than the barium test to examine the digestive tract. These include:
-
Flexible endoscopy – an endoscope is a slender tube with a lens at one end and a telescope at the other.
This is inserted through an orifice (such as mouth or anus) or a small incision and the doctor looks down the telescoped end for a magnified view.
-
Computed tomography (CT) scan – the CT scan uses x-rays and digital computer technology to create an image of internal body structures. Nowadays CT can be used to replace an endoscopy – this test is called a virtual colonoscopy.

1) Do a stomach cleanse. ...
2) Every other day excluding breaks: Stirring/Supporting
Take amino acids sub lingually.
Make sure it melts, let it sit in your mouth like a mouth wash except you avoid your teeth when its too acid, and you swallow it in the end. Depending on the amino, it's more or less acid. If your supplements come in caps, open them up and trash the gelatin container. If it's in bulk, better as you need more than what they give you in caps to detox in a reasonable amount of time.
So try dipping your finger in it and taste it. If it's too acid then dilute in water.
You don't want to get blisters or be too hard on your teeth.
Amino acids to stir Barium out of your cells.
If you get diarrhea or a squishy stomach, you took too much.
Remember that detox is a process, not an event.
I hear people say you start with lower doses and then increase. That's wrong.
You start with lower dose, like 50 mg. Then the day after you take the same dose and so on for 3-4 days.
See you might be fine with your 50 mg the first day and on the 4th day you might be all stomach sick because it's a process, not an event.
So if you have been good for 4 days, you can take a break if you want, or go with 75 mg for 4 days.
If you get squishy stomach, then take a break and start again at 50 mg.
That might be your limit.
Otherwise keep incrementing the dose until you know how much you can take, it depends on the individual, his age, his/her level of toxicity, where he lives, what culture he/she is from and what zodiac sign and sensitivity he/she got.
3) 2.5 hours later: Chelating/Bonding
Take DMSA to bond the freed Barium.
Well same thing you put DMSA sub lingually. for the same reason as not above, so the stomach barrier and different acidity do not interfere with the absorbtion of the acidity of your thing.
4) 2.5 hours later: Flushing/Supporting
Take Vitamin C to flush it out.
Watch that it's not too late in the day, it would keep you awake.
5) Next day, Replenishing.
You take multivitamins. No stirring or chelation or bonding today.
Take multivitamin to rebuild your energetical resources.
... list of things you can do to reduce the inflammatory response that is caused by some of these chemicals:
Tocopherols in Vitamin E will help reduce inflammation in your brain and body, thus reducing the toxic effect of chemtrails. Almond milk is a great source of naturally occurring Vitamin E, as is
Vitamin C, when added to Vitamin E, is a powerful protector of the brain, according to Dr. Blaylock.
Curcumin binds with aluminum and helps to reduce its toxic effects, and supports its elimination from the body.
Saffron is another great way to support brain health and detox these chemicals.
It is also full of cancer-fighting carotenoids. In some studies, saffron has also shown to promote learning, memory and recall due to a compound in the plant called ‘crocin’.
Flax seed has been shown to help reduce radiation poisoning and boost brain power as well.
Cinnamon is full of antioxidants and can also reduce the inflammatory response in the body.

Chemtrails is the name given to the fog-like trails visible in the sky behind jet aircraft.
Contrails is the name also given to these trails of vapor, although they have been know from the beginning of jet aircraft flight to be the result of the influence of the hot temperature of the metal wings of the aircraft moving through moisture in the atmosphere and converting some of the water content into steam vapor.
... the numerous chemicals in chemtrails (thorium, barium, mercury, aluminum oxide, and strontium).
Discerning the difference between chemtrails and contrails depends upon a close visual reference of the plane moving through the atmosphere, and, the purpose of the flight, as best as one can find out from the aircraft operator. Chemtrails ARE the result of aircraft having been equipped with taks of liquid chemicals and their being disbursed from nozzles mounted on the fusalage of the aircraft, or, in banks of nozzles under the wings of the plane.
COMMON purposes for the use of chemical spraying include:
- crop spraying/dusting for pests,
- area target spraying for mosquitoes & other insects,
- spaying of chemical defoiliant Agent Orange compound,
- broadcast seeding of crops

The USA government has used combinations of particulate to spread over clouds in efforts to force the moisture to condense into rainfall. They have also disbursed particulate in the atmposphere in an effort to facilitate 3D mapping from satellites. The shared scientific reality of cloud seeding has witnessed the shooting of flares loaded with silver iodide into cumulus clouds. This does NOT leave this ribbons of vapor tracking after the airplanes.
Terry Krauss, a meteorologist with the Alberta Severe Weather Management Society, a nonprofit agency funded by insurance firms. “Our data show that the seeding may have avoided up to Ca$100 million in damage to homes and cars,” he says. On a severe storm day, he adds, even a 1% reduction in hail intensity will more than pay for the annual Ca$4 million cost of Alberta’s hail suppression program.
Not only has cloud seeding been used to mitigate hailstorms for years, it has also been used to try to enhance rain- and snowfall for water storage in reservoirs and in the ground. These small-scale projects are not to be confused with geoengineering schemes that propose tinkering with the planet’s weather by modifying Earth’s ability to reflect solar energy. Currently, more than 50 countries worldwide participate in cloud-seeding operations.
And these operations are growing in popularity. Almost half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas by 2030, according to estimates from the United Nations. This year, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) awarded $5 million to rain enhancement researchers in Japan, Germany, and the U.A.E. to address the problem.
Earlier (before 2015) studies would inject silver iodide into clouds, then compare precipitation gauges in areas inside and outside the seeding zone. But the studies weren’t repeatable, and they didn’t include enough trials to guarantee that observed increases in precipitation weren’t due to chance. The challenge with measuring the effect of weather modification is that natural rain- and snowfall variability is 10 to 100 times as large as the amount of precipitation augmented by seeding, (Roelof) Bruintjes (an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)) says. ....
Another climate modeling experiment conducted over 8 winters in the WWMPP (Wyoming Weather Modification Pilot Project) study area, however, estimates that about 30% of winter precipitation in the region comes from seedable clouds. Not every cloud in the mountains meets the criteria for seeding, says Jaclyn Ritzman, a meteorologist at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration who ran the study. The temperature and the wind speed and direction have to be just right. Assuming that seeding promotes about a 10% rise in precipitation, Ritzman and her team suggest that seeding could augment the snowpack by a maximum of 3% over an entire season. ...
Natural background levels of silver iodide in snow are about 1 to 2 parts per trillion, and after seeding, researchers look for levels from 4 to 20 ppt. Although silver is toxic to aquatic organisms in large doses, the levels found in surface water after seeding are well below the toxic threshold of 50,000 ppt, Benner says. “Nevertheless, if the practice of cloud seeding intensifies at a larger scale, silver toxicity and other environmental issues could become a concern,” (Rob Jackson, an ecologist at Stanford University) Jackson says. ...
Atmospheric budgets suggest that cloud seeding is unlikely to steal moisture from downwind sites, responds Weather Modification’s Boe. Because clouds represent a modest portion of the moisture in the atmosphere, a cloud-seeding effect of 15% would only remove about 1–2% of the total water vapor in the seeding area, he contends.
(Bruce Boe, vice president of meteorology at Weather Modification Inc.)
COMMENT:
Prof Mansur Abahusayn (February 24, 2017)
Atanacio: Over 70 years of research have gone to cloud seeding to increase rainfall, and the results are inconclusive at best, please see (http://cen.acs.org/articles/94/i22/Does-cloud-seeding-really-work.html). Some of the hundreds of millions of dollars dedicated to cloud seeding should be directed at new ideas and patents.
Extracting moisture from clouds, fog and the like has the advantage that the huge energy required to condense water vapor to liquid is avoided. The process of cloud water micro-droplets to rain is probably an entropy rather than thermal demand. Sound, as expressed in thunder, has the effect of increasing turbulence and mixing which enhances coalescence of micro-droplets to larger drops that fall as rain in warm clouds.

Jets leave white trails, or contrails, in their wakes for the same reason you can sometimes see your breath.
The hot, humid exhaust from jet engines mixes with the atmosphere, which at high altitude is of much lower vapor pressure and temperature (colder) than the exhaust gas. The water vapor contained in the jet exhaust condenses and may freeze, and this mixing process forms a cloud very similar to the one your hot breath makes on a cold day.
Jet engine exhaust contains carbon dioxide, oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, unburned fuel, soot and metal particles, as well as water vapor. The soot provides condensation sites for the water vapor. Any particles present in the air provide additional sites.
Depending on a planes altitude, and the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere, contrails may vary in their thickness, extent and duration. The nature and persistence of jet contrails can be used to predict the weather. A thin, short-lived contrail indicates low-humidity air at high altitude, a sign of fair weather, whereas a thick, long-lasting contrail reflects humid air at high altitudes and can be an early indicator of a storm. ...

There are two types of contrails: aerodynamic contrails and exhaust contrails.
Aerodynamic contrails occur when moist air cools due to lowered pressure, condensing humidity in the air and forming a contrail cloud.
It can come from any surface which lowers the air pressure - but it's commonly caused by your propellor or wings.
When an airfoil decreases air pressure, it also decreases the air's temperature.
If the humidity's high, the drop in temperature and pressure can lower the air's temperature past the dew point and form a contrail cloud.
The more your wings decrease pressure, the greater the temperature drop.
So, an aircraft with high wing loading can generate large aerodynamic contrails.
Aerodynamic contrails don't last long.
As soon as the aerodynamically cooled air comes back up to ambient temperature, the contrails dissipate.
That's why aerodynamic contrails are so short lived.
Exhaust Contrails
Exhaust contrails are more common, and they're usually seen behind aircraft cruising in the flight levels.
They form when hot, moist air exiting an engine mixes with extremely cold air - condensing the exhaust's moisture.
The ambient air temperature has to drop below -24 degrees Celsius at sea level, and reach below -45 degrees Celsius at FL500 for exhaust contrails to form. A cirrus cloud layer can indicate that conditions are right for exhaust contrails.
Since these contrails form when the exhaust air temperature drops to match the ambient temperature, they can last for a long time. In fact, in a high traffic zone, multiple contrails can combine to form an overcast cirrus layer.
Sometimes these clouds can shimmer like a rainbow - and you may have heard that this happens when the contrails freeze into ice crystals. That's partially true, but even liquid water droplets in contrails can produce the effect. It happens when the sun refracts through the water or ice, which acts like a prism to bend the light's colors.
Exhaust and Aerodynamic Contrails Can Happen Simultaneously
Aircraft can produce both types of contrails at the same time.
When an aircraft is cruising at a high flight level where the air is thin, its high angle of attack can produce an aerodynamic contrail if the humidity's high. If the temperature's extremely cold, which usually is the case in the high flight levels, it can create exhaust contrails, too. You'll see the aerodynamic contrail disappear quickly, but the exhaust contrail will last considerably longer.
What consequence might these jet-triggered clouds have?
Well, most clouds fall into one of two categories. High, thin cirrus clouds are normally warming clouds.
They let sunlight through but are good at trapping heat radiating back upwards from the Earth.
Low, thick stratus clouds, on the other hand, are typically cooling clouds, because they tend to be more efficient at blocking and reflecting sunlight than they are at trapping radiated heat. Contrails are initially thick, bright, highly reflective clouds, but over time they morph into wispy cirrus clouds. Are they then warming or cooling clouds?
(On) September 11, 2001 ... For the first time since the jet age began, virtually all aircraft were grounded over the United States for three days. ... climatologists realized they had an unprecedented opportunity to scrutinize individual contrails, and several studies were quickly launched.
One study looked at the aforementioned contrails that grew to cover 7,700 square miles.
Those condensation trails arose in the wake of 6 military aircraft flying between Virginia and Pennsylvania on September 12, 2001. From those isolated contrails, unmixed as they were with the usual dozens of others, Patrick Minnis, a senior research scientist at NASA's Langely Research Center, and his colleagues were able to gain valuable insight into how a single contrail forms. ...
Another study that took advantage of the grounding gave striking evidence of what contrails can do.
David Travis of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and two colleagues measured the difference, over those three contrail-free days, between the highest daytime temperature and the lowest nighttime temperature across the continental U.S. They compared those data with the average range in day-night temperatures for the period 1971-2000, again across the contiguous 48 states. Travis's team discovered that from roughly midday September 11 to midday September 14, the days had become warmer and the nights cooler, with the overall range greater by about two degrees Fahrenheit.
These results suggest that contrails can suppress both daytime highs (by reflecting sunlight back to space) and nighttime lows (by trapping radiated heat). That is, they can be both cooling and warming clouds. But what is the net effect? Do they cool more than they warm, or vice versa? "Well, the assumption is a net warming," Travis says, "but there is a lot of argument still going on about how much of a warming effect they produce."
Distrails
A distrail is the opposite of a contrail.
Where an aircraft passes through a cloud, it can disperse the cloud in its path.
This is known as a distrail (short for "dissipation trail").
The plane's warm engine exhaust causes existing water droplets to evaporate, leaving a clear wake through an otherwise cloudy sky.
Clouds form when invisible water vapor (H2O in gas phase) condenses into microscopic water droplets (H2O in liquid phase) or into microscopic ice crystals (H2O in solid phase). This may happen when air with a high proportion of gaseous water cools. A distrail forms when the heat of engine exhaust evaporates the liquid water droplets in a cloud, turning them back into invisible, gaseous water vapor.
Wingtip vortices
Cloud chambers visualise particles of radiation on a similar principle to contrails or wingtip vortices.
There the radiation particles serves as nuclei for formation of droplets creating a contrail like phenomenon
As a wing generates lift, it causes a vortex to form at the wingtip, and at the tip of the flap when deployed (wingtips and flap-boundaries are discontinuities in airflow.) These wingtip vortices persist in the atmosphere long after the aircraft has passed. The reduction in pressure and temperature across each vortex can cause water to condense and make the cores of the wingtip vortices visible. This effect is more common on humid days. Wingtip vortices can sometimes be seen behind the wing flaps of airliners during takeoff and landing, and during landing of the Space Shuttle.
The visible cores of wingtip vortices contrast with the other major type of contrails which are caused by the combustion of fuel. Contrails produced from jet engine exhaust are seen at high altitude, directly behind each engine. By contrast, the visible cores of wingtip vortices are usually seen only at low altitude where the aircraft is travelling slowly after takeoff or before landing, and where the ambient humidity is higher. They trail behind the wingtips and wing flaps rather than behind the engines.
At high-thrust settings the fan blades at the intake of a turbofan engine reach transonic speeds, causing a sudden drop in air pressure. This creates the condensation fog (inside the intake) which is often observed by air travelers during takeoff.
The tips of rotating surfaces (such as propellers and rotors) sometimes produce visible contrails.

Comment:
JJ2007
I began using this new (to me) weight-loss supplement on Tue, 05/29/2012.
Just like clockwork, exactly 7 days later, I awoke feeling really terrific, upbeat, and in a very chirpy mood -- for no reason at all. Oh wait, it must be that the 'Optimized Saffron' is kicking in, promoting my all-over feel-good, attitude-adjustment. Yippee! I just love feeling energized, centered, and positive. The loss of 3.5 lbs, within 7 days' time, didn't hurt either. Happy, Happy, Happy!

Natural Factors Vitamin C 1000 mg plus Bioflavonoids & Rosehips is a superior antioxidant formulation containing citrus bioflavonoids plus a 4:1 extract of rosehips.
A powerful vitamin with infection-fighting properties, vitamin C plays a large role in immune system function. Best known for its antioxidant activity, vitamin C is crucial for the formation of collagen, making this vitamin very important for wound repair, healthy gums, strong bones and teeth, and in the prevention of bruising.
Rosehip is the fruit of a rose and contains a variety of antioxidants as well as natural vitamin C.
Bioflavonoids are a large family of substances found in most of the same foods that are good sources of vitamin C; they are the natural pigments that give fruits and vegetables their colour.
Shown to improve the absorption and therapeutic action of vitamin C and protect vitamin C from oxidation in the body, bioflavonoids allow the body to reap more benefits from vitamin C. Also known to have a positive impact on the cardiovascular system as well as memory, rosehips and bioflavonoids work synergistically with vitamin C to enhance each other’s activity.
