MSM is 34.06% elemental sulfur, 25.52% carbon, 6.42% hydrogen and 34% oxygen.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a chemical found in green plants, animals, and humans.
It can also be made in a laboratory.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is created naturally through the earth’s sulfur cycle when phytoplankton and algae die and decompose, releasing sulfur compounds into the atmosphere where they are transformed to DMS. In the presence of ozone and sunlight, DMS is converted to DMSO and MSM. Both are water-soluble and return to the earth’s surface in rain water and are absorbed by vegetation and ultimately eaten by animals. These sources contain very small amounts of MSM, typically < 1 ppm, with the highest concentration in mammal’s milk at 8.2 ppm. Therefore, all commercially available MSM must be manufactured because the amounts found naturally are too small to be extracted.
In nature, MSM Organic Sulfur occurs in many foods (think eggs, milk and tomatoes), but in very insignificant amounts; limiting our ability to intake an appropriate amount of sulfur. Additionally, research has found that the sulfate reserve in humans is among the smallest of animal species and may be depleted by a low protein diet and acetaminophen (also called Tylenol©) intake.
Sulfur is used to produce vital nutrients such as amino acids, some of which are involved in detoxification and pain relief. MSM holds our basic connective tissues together, forming the elemental structure of proteins, and is required for a number of enzymatic functions.
MSM occurs naturally in several foods, such as pine nuts and milk, which has led to speculation that people with some food allergies can't take MSM supplements [source: MSM Guide]. Although there are nutritional supplements (such as glucosamine) that are off-limits to certain food allergy patients, that's not the case for MSM.
All MSM in supplements is synthetically produced.
However, that doesn't mean you're home free on the allergy front.
Different manufacturers may combine MSM with different ingredients.
Before taking MSM, you do need to check these ingredients for allergens or other chemicals that might be contraindicated with your current prescriptions.
Even more importantly, be aware that the quality of synthetic MSM can differ dramatically.
Some inferior MSM supplements contain trace amounts of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, and those most certainly can build up in your system, with toxic effects. If it's produced at plants that produce other synthetic chemicals, some MSM may contain other contaminants, such as benzene or -- depending on the manufacturer -- pesticides.
How do you steer clear of such dangers?
Look for MSM that has been purified by distillation, not crystallization.
The crystallization process is where toxic elements can accumulate.
Distilled MSM, on the other hand, ought to be chemically identical to the naturally occurring molecules.
MSM has become popular because of the book The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain. But there is little published scientific research to support its use. Contrary to some literature that promotes MSM, there is no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for MSM or sulfur, which is in MSM. Sulfur deficiency has not been described in the medical literature.
Working: Effectiveness may depend upon Synergistics.

MSM might supply sulfur to make other chemicals in the body.
Effective for:
-
Muscle damage caused by exercise.
Research shows that taking MSM daily beginning 10 days before a 14 km running exercise can help reduce muscle damage.
-
Hemorrhoids.
Research shows that applying a specific gel containing MSM together with hyaluronic acid and tea tree oil (Proctoial, BSD Pharma, Italy) for 14 days can reduce pain, bleeding, and irritation in people with hemorrhoids.
-
Osteoarthritis.
Research shows that taking MSM by mouth in two to three divided doses daily, either alone or together with glucosamine, can slightly reduce pain and swelling and improve function in people with osteoarthritis. But the improvements might not be clinically significant. Also, MSM might not improve stiffness or overall symptoms. Taking an MSM product (Lignisul, Laborest Italia S.p.A., Italy) together with boswellic acid (Triterpenol, Laborest Italia S.p.A., Italy) daily for 60 days might reduce the need for anti-inflammatory drugs but does not reduce pain. Also, early research suggests that taking a combination product containing MSM (AR7 Joint Complex, Robinson Pharma, Orange County, CA) by mouth for 12 weeks improves rating scores for joint pain and tenderness in people with osteoarthritis, but does not improve the appearance of joints.
Possibly Ineffective for
-
Varicose veins and other circulatory problems (chronic venous insufficiency).
Research shows that applying MSM and EDTA to the skin can reduce swelling in the calf, ankle, and foot in people with chronic venous insufficiency. But applying MSM alone seems to actually increase swelling.
-
Exercise performance.
Research shows that taking MSM daily for 28 days does not improve exercise performance.
Also, applying a specific cream containing MSM (MagPro, Custom Prescription Shoppe, Augusta, GA) before stretching does not seem to improve flexibility of endurance.
Insufficient Evidence for
-
Hay fever.
Early research suggests that taking MSM (OptiMSM 650 mg) by mouth for 30 days can relieve some symptoms of hay fever.
-
Shoulder surgery.
Early research suggest that taking a specific combination product containing MSM (Tenosan, Agave s.r.l., Prato, Italy) for 3 months can reduce pain after surgery and slightly improve healing. But it does not seem to help the overall function of the shoulder after surgery.
-
Joint pain.
Research shows that taking a specific combination product (Instaflex Joint Support, Direct Digital, Charlotte, NC) containing MSM daily for 8 weeks reduces joint pain. But this product does not seem to improve stiffness or function.
-
Rosacea.
Research shows that applying an MSM cream to the skin twice daily for one month can improve redness and other symptoms of rosacea.
-
Tendon pain due to overuse.
Early research suggests that taking a specific combination product containing MSM (Tenosan, Agave s.r.l., Prato, Italy) might improve the outcomes of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in people with tendon pain. But it is not clear if the benefits are from MSM or other ingredients in this product.
Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral.

Confusion and doubt arise often regarding the uses and benefits of MSM because most people do not understand that it is effective at limiting the destructive influences of SOME bacteria and viruses and not all. Making a list of the specific antigens it limits is futile as most people have no access to means of determining which ones they are being exposed to. Even healthcare workers and researchers have little discernment between different antigen forms and species.
Quality vs contamination is a second major consideration related to safety and effectiveness of MSM use.
It is conceivable that one could acquire a heavy metal or chemical toxicity from the use of impure MSM supplements.
This caution also applies to other supplements and in particular to Chinese herbals ... some of which work intentionally with the addition of heavy metals ... perhaps originally in the context of a homeopathic strength (constructive) yet currently present in toxic amounts. Consider that toxic amounts of heavy metals and some chemicals can act as short-term pain and anxiety relievers through system depressive influence.
Concerned, despairing, and paranoid persons seeking a remedy too often become over-confident, over-enthusiastic, and authoritarian about a benefit they have received from MSM use and then promote its use to others on much broader terms than is relevant. The disheartening cycle is that others may then use MSM for irrelevant though perceptively SIMILAR kinds of ailments, find it unsuitable, and doubt its ability to provide ANY benefits. Being aware of these dynamics can assist one in making better decisions and acknowledging more specific realities.

MSM is a nutrient that is needed by the body for certain functions such as relieving heartburn, allergies, and arthritis pain.
However, there are some MSM side effects to be concerned with.
If you take too much MSM, you may experience a bit of diarrhea, nausea or headache [source: Mayo Clinic].
But that's probably it. However, there may be other side effects depending on the quality and production of your MSM supplements.
You can't actually be allergic to sulfur itself, because it's an element, not a protein.
But plenty of people are allergic to sulfur compounds. ...
In some people, MSM might cause
- nausea,
- diarrhea,
- bloating,
- fatigue,
- headache,
- insomnia,
- itching, or
- worsening of allergy symptoms.
Do not get confused between MSM, Sulfur, and, Sulfa Drugs.
MSM is organic sulfur and is a nutrient.
Sulfa-based drugs do not occur naturally and are used for the same purposes as antibiotics.
While many people are allergic to sulfa drugs, no similar reactions have ever been reported with MSM.
A third type of sulfur, the yellow elemental sulfur from chemistry class, can also be toxic to some individuals.
MSM presents organic sulfur in a form that the body can readily assimilate.
Varicose veins and other circulatory problems (chronic venous insufficiency):
Applying a lotion that contains MSM to the lower limbs can increase swelling and pain in people with varicose veins and other circulatory problems.
There is a controversy surrounding MSM because of its relationship to DMSO.
Though it is technically considered safe, Dr. Jacobs, a surgeon, determined that there are some side effects such as a strange taste in the mouth. Also, some people experience allergic-type side effects. MSM could have these same problems.
There are also some MSM heart side effects to be concerned with.
If you have an existing heart condition, this could be a concern. Also, if you have conditions such as liver disease or on blood thinning drugs, you also need to be careful and consult with your doctor. Over time, the possibility of getting skin rashes from it is also a concern.
Studies reveal that MSM should always be taken as prescribed.
Beyond the specified dose, MSM starts giving problems.
Usually the dose is of 1 gram per kilograms of body weight per day for 30 days.
If taken in the form of intravenous injections, 0.5 grams per kg body weight daily for five days a week is prescribed.
No measurable toxicity is found in the humans if consumed on a specified degree.
It is also tested as a food ingredient which results in no allergic reactions.
According to a study by Oregon Health Sciences University, the long-term usage of MSM over a period of 6 months actually shows no toxic effects.
But, it can be lethal.
It is found that the lethal dose (LD50) of MSM for humans is more than one and a half kilograms of per kilograms of body weight per day for 30 days. Here’s a brief overview of the bad effects of MSM.
MSM Side Effects on the Liver
Can MSM cause liver damage or disease? Is it bad the liver’s health and enzymes?
For healthy individuals MSM is thought to be safe for the liver.
However, in cases where this supplement is used for the sole purpose of detoxification, some users may experience a Herxheimer reaction combined with strong detox effects. These effects
may not sit well with patients or individuals with unending health issues
Side Effects of MSM on Heart
MSM is surely a wonder cure for various health hazards, but consuming it more than the prescribed limit can trigger heart disease.
This is why doctors usually refrain from giving MSM dose to patients with existing heart conditions.
Several cases are reported where MSM consumption has caused the heart racing or increasing palpitations.
MSM and Gas Effects
In an issue of “Osteoarthritis and Cartilage”, published in 2006, Dr. L.S. Kim has clearly indicated with a report that on a placebo-controlled osteoarthritis clinical trial, the patient was given 6,000 mg/day for 12 weeks. The high dose was given for relieving pain, but it led to gastrointestinal bloating in the treatment group, which is associated with stomach pain, gas, heartburn, vomiting as well as nausea. Research say, excessive amount of sulfur in the stomach actually reacts with the digestive acid, which leads to bloating eventually.
Taking MSM in any other form than powder was also shown cause severe bloating in the treatment group.
The bloating can actually last for a day or two. The non-powder form of MSM supplement comes with adulterants, which when they pass into the duodenum cause severe reactions and make you bloat.
Constipation and diarrhea are the common outcomes of the stomach irritation when MSM doses go higher than the specified amount.
MSM and Weight Gain
Though MSM is known for its weight loss properties, it can reverse the effects if not taken according to the doctor’s prescription.
However, in some cases, the right dosage also causes the reverse effects when taken for an extended period of time.
What usually happens is, consumption of MSM increases appetite. The more you eat, more it makes your body healthy.
Doctors often say that it’s not actually about gaining fat, instead it’s about feeling healthy.
MSM consumption increases your inclination towards fibrous foods, which accumulate in your digestive system to give you a healthy weight along with glowing skin. From this perspective, weight gain is not exactly a side effect. In fact, MSM doses are prescribed for people who are anorexic.
MSM Side Effects of Dizziness
As experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center warns, MSM supplements can cause headache and dizziness, if taken for an extended period of time. It’s important to see a doctor, when you are on MSM dose. Many patients keep taking it even without knowing that the course is over. In such cases, patients may feel sensations of dizziness and instability while standing or walking.
Sometimes, it also gives you a worse headache that resembles the dull pain of migraine.
Such pains not only affect your ability to concentrate on daily tasks, but also cause vision problems in the long run.
It’s important to consult a medical practitioner, if you are facing such problems.
Does MSM Cause Acne Break out?
Though MSM is known as a great medicine for treating acne and similar blemishes on the skin, excessive use of this product can work the reverse. You might suffer from acne breakouts , if you consume this supplement excess. This organosulfur compound is a sulphur supplement which is supposed to compensate the sulphur imbalance in the human body.
Again, it is prescribed to different patients for different ailments.
If you are consuming it for something which does not require MSM, you might end up with acne scars.
Also, you should start with a small dose and gradually increase it over a two week’s time.
MSM is believed to be a strong detoxifier, hence you might end up growing detox acne, if you start taking high-dose at the very beginning.
MSM Overdose Side Effects
MSM overdose is apparently very rare. Even if it happens, patients do not suffer any serious health hazards.
Symptoms like detox acne breakout, heartburn, dizziness and abrupt weight gain tend to occur.
... Severities are usually uncommon unless you have some pre-existing heart disease.
MSM Adverse Effects
There is no conclusive information exploring the adverse effects of Methylsulfonylmethane.
However, seek emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction as a result of taking MSM.
Tips on how to prevent to side effects of MSM
Side effects in Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM are pretty uncommon.
The potential side effects have already been mentioned above.
However, the potentiality of side effects can be prevented.
The following tips will be helpful.
- Avoid using MSM if you are allergic to any ingredient in methylsulfonylmethane or to any other sulfa or sulfonamide (e.g., sulfisoxazole, sulfamethoxazole)
- Do not consume MSM if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant in a year’s time.
Breastfeeding mothers should also avoid taking MSM.
- Check the MSM dose with the doctor if you are taking any prescription, nonprescription medicine or herbal preparation and dietary supplement.
- Strictly follow the MSM dose as prescribed by the doctors.
- Use it as a powder or pill as prescribed for you.
- Drink lots of water to flush in case of Herxheimer reaction and strong detox effects
In conclusion …
Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM is indeed a wonder medicine, but only when you are taking it as per prescription.
An overdose might trigger annoying side effects.
Integrity: Source can be most important to benefit.

Being aware of these dynamics can assist one in making better decisions and acknowledging more specific realities.
To purify raw MSM, manufacturers can choose to either distill the compound, which is an expensive, difficult, and time-consuming process requiring skilled chemists, sophisticated laboratory-grade equipment, and considerable industrial know-how, or they can crystallize with a “spin and wash” process, which is cheap, quick, and easy. Most manufacturers choose crystallization, which allows them to cut production costs and create a less expensive product. But crystallization has significant drawbacks; it produces a much lower quality MSM. To crystallize MSM, manufacturers wash the MSM with water and spin it in centrifuges. Though inexpensive compared to distillation, the process of crystallization is prone to trapping contaminants, and it will concentrate any impurities in the water or source chemicals used (MSM purified with this method is often manufactured in China using local municipal water supplies).
... The (more particular) manufacturers use 4 stage distillation processes that employ heat to separate MSM from manufacturing byproducts, contaminants, and moisture, resulting in a product which is more pure and less prone to degradation (than that produced by crystallization). While crystallization adds moisture and then imperfectly spins it away, heat based distillation removes moisture.
About the quality of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)
Originally, all MSM was produced in the US by Bergstrom Nutrition (previously Cardinal Nutrition). Bergstrom Nutrition is the only dedicated GMP MSM production facility in the world, eliminating the risk of contamination from toxins like benzene, toluene or pesticides. Bergstrom’s MSM is called OptiMSM.
In the past several years, however, MSM is also produced in plants in China and India and Canada and is imported into the US and EU under the same generic name but for prices that are less than one-fifth of the Bergstrom Nutrition made MSM. OptiMSM is pharmaceutical grade quality MSM, and is produced by the method of distillation. This process removes any potential impurities, leaving only pure MSM, i.e. OptiMSM. The quality is supported by a certificate of analysis for each batch produced, which shows that bacteria and yeasts are absent. The concentrations of heavy metals, an important potential contaminant, is specified to be absent near the analytical levels of detection (for mercury, for example, at less than 0.001 parts per million).
Other producers use the crystallization method, which is a less expensive production process. In this process, the MSM is dissolved in water and then dried, trapping any contaminants present in the water. This MSM comes with certificates of analysis in which the absence of yeast, bacteria and fungi is often not guaranteed, and the concentrations of heavy metals is shown as a generic group at less than 20 parts per million.
With MSM produced by crystallization, what has been concentrated as a contaminant into the product can vary from capsule to capsule, and equally likely between one batch and another. Yet the decision to choose a distillation product with its determined and consistent higher quality and purity over a crystallization one is not a simple rational option as the reader may make here. If the purchaser is unaware of the different methods of production and their different benefits and risks ... there is no choice beyond access, price, and, brand name. If the purchaser is aware of these differences, there may be a question of opportunity related to which country they live in and whether the product they would prefer to choose can be shipped to them. Then, there is a requirement of financial ability and whether the purchaser can easily make a choice without serious concern regarding price differences. In addition, a most critical consideration is whether ANY form of MSM is relevant for the individual according to their current health and their goal of either maintaining their health, improving their health through detoxing, and, whether MSM will conflict with any prescription medicines they are taking or any supplements they are, or intend, to take.
Classification, Testing, and, Regulation ...
(for some USA products)
MSM Organic Sulfur is classified as a dietary supplement (a “food”), regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). The FDA has the right to recall or ban dietary supplements that are found to be unsafe; however, the MSM Organic Sulfur (sold by No Boundaries Health and Wellness) has been classified as “generally recognized as safe,” a designation reserved for few products. Moreover, the FDA requires that all dietary supplements are manufactured in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) using documentation and consistent methods. More information about FDA regulations can be found within the FDA website.
LINK: http://www.fda.gov/food/guidanceregulation/...
Other current (2018-09) production standards for MSM Organic Sulfur were created by the AOAC International, an independent, NIH-sponsored, FDA-endorsed international community of chemists. The AOAC International has created standards and tests to ensure that manufacturers use the same types of methods and tools for testing, so that the consumer can uniformly compare products.
Association of Official Agricultural Chemists

Important tests for comparison include:
-
High resolution gas chromatography (“HRGC”) – establishes the volatile purity of organic sulfur (“volatile” impurities referring to those impurities that evaporate easily).
-
Melting point
– helps to reveal non-volatile purities which cannot be determined by HRGC.
This testing is important in conjunction with the HRGC testing to determine that the organic sulfur you are consuming is also pure from non-volatility impurities (“non-volatile” referring to a substance that does not readily evaporate into a gas under existing conditions).
-
Karl Fischer Titration Method (“KFT”)
– Pure organic sulfur should be extremely dry, with a water content of less than 0.1%.
-
Metals Testing
- heavy metals; Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead, as well as the metal Aluminum.
Additionally, as water is an integral part of the production process, guidelines regarding water supply are very important.
Thus, it is worth noting that foreign MSM production facilities may be located in areas where local water supplies do not meet the more stringent U.S. Federal guidelines for organic and inorganic volatiles, heavy metals, and other contaminants, making heavy metal testing essential.
-
Microbiological Testing
- for aerobic bacteria, total coliforms, and yeast and molds.
Again, this testing can be affected by water contamination.
Poor water quality can lead to coliform and bacterial contamination.
Too much moisture in the product can lead to yeast and mold contamination.

Dosage is generally in the range of 2-8 grams per day in 2-3 divided doses.
If you do not experience at least the beginnings of the results you seek in a matter of a few weeks, feel free to experiment with larger dosage amounts. For more definitive recommendations, read Dr. Jacob’s Book, The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain.
As with most dietary supplements, the general rule with MSM is to take as much as is needed to see positive benefit, and no more.
But it is very imporant first to know where your MSM is made.
Plus make sure your MSM is pure. ...
next determine the dosage.
Too much MSM will give some people minor upset stomachs or more frequent stools.
Take MSM with food to decrease the chance of gastrointestinal discomfort.
Like vitamin C, bodies that are more in need of MSM will generally tolerate more of it, since they are absorbing more MSM into the cells (upset stomachs result when excess MSM is diverted into the gastrointestinal system for expulsion).
People taking MSM simply as a dietary supplement for general maintenance will be fine with 2 grams a day.
Patients seeking therapeutic relief of minor ailments, such as allergies, should start low, with about 2 grams of MSM per day, and work their way up if needed -- most will find relief at around 4 to 6 grams per day.
Athletes will often take 2 to 3 grams before and after workouts to reduce muscle soreness and lactic acid buildup.
People with more severe chronic conditions, such as arthritis or back pain, will often need much higher doses, and should work their way up over a two or three week period, starting with a full teaspoon (4 grams) taken in the morning, then, after a few days, another teaspoon taken in the afternoon. After a couple of weeks they should increase the dosage to a tablespoon (12 grams) in the morning, and another one in the afternoon. Most people don’t need to take more than two tablespoons (24 grams) per day, depending on their bodyweight.
Some doctors will prescribe their patients to take as much as 40 to 60 grams per day, but this should never be undertaken without medical supervision.
Consult your veterinarian regarding appropriate animal doses; as a general rule, give animals about one gram per day for every 20 lbs of bodyweight, and increase to two grams or more if you don’t see improvement. Remember that you may see variation in your animal’s stool if you don’t start with smaller doses and gradually work them up.
One flat teaspoon of MSM (powder) ... weighs 2 grams.
One study published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage recommends starting with 1.5 grams per day and then increasing up to 6 grams per day in divided doses. Take with food at least 30 minutes before or after consuming prescription medications. Avoid taking in the late afternoon or in the evening, or, close to a planned resting or sleep period ... as sulfur supplements have been associated with increased energy expression.
Forms of Supplemental MSM
MSM can be taken either orally or topically.
Due to its unique nature and small size, MSM has the ability to pass through tissue, absorbing into the skin and the tissues beneath when applied on the skin.
Topically applied MSM is usually sold as a gel or cream, and is often mixed with lavender, Aloe Vera, or menthol.
As an oral supplement, MSM is usually encapsulated for people taking only 2 to 8 grams a day, the most common dosage.
People taking larger doses often prefer MSM powder, which is sold either as coarse flakes or fine crystals.
Coarse flakes are the most natural form of MSM, but they take longer to dissolve in liquid.
Fine crystals are more powdery and easily dissolved, but a very small amount of non-toxic silicon dioxide (0.1%) is added to prevent clumping. ...
Which you use is a matter of personal preference; either way, the main challenge will be masking (or enduring) the bitter taste. Many people can easily tolerate a spoonful of MSM powder placed on their tongue and swallowed with some orange juice. Other people prefer to dissolve MSM in a glass fruit juice.
Hot liquids will not damage its chemical structure, so it can also be added to tea, coffee, or even soup.
Many people give powdered MSM to their animals, especially those with big animals, like equestrians and zoo handlers, but also people who choose to give MSM to smaller herbivorous pets such as rabbits or Guinea Pigs. Dog and cat owners most often give MSM through flavored chewable joint or coat supplements designed for pets that incorporate MSM along with other compounds, such as glucosamine, chondroitin, or Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. Before giving any animal a form of MSM other than a specially-formulated pet supplement, always check with your veterinarian on appropriate dosage amounts.

Organic Sulfur is a critical bio-available form of sulfur that has been missing from our diet since 1954.
That is when farners stopped using manure as a fertilizer.
The introduction of synthetic chemical nitrogen based fertilizers by chemical companies in the 50s has had a profound negative effect on our health. The only way to replace this essential nutrient is through supplements.
Sulfur and its mineral compounds have been chemically stripped from the soils of commercial farming.
This has caused a sulfur deficiency in plants and so in humans and animals, our bodies depend on the uptake of bio-available sulfur and its related minerals through the eating of fruits and vegetables.
Animals and man don't store sulfur so we need to take it everyday!

"The Vanishing Nutrient That Your Skin, Muscle and Bones Depend On*"
As you age, the flexible tissues in your body tend to lose their elasticity, which can lead to sagging and wrinkling skin, as well as less flexible muscles and less comfortable joints. And one of the nutrients they need most to support them may be in decreasing supply.*
Sulfur bonds are required for proteins to maintain their shape, and these bonds determine the biological activity of the proteins.*
Your hair, skin, and nails consist of a tough protein composed in significant part of sulfur called keratin.*
And connective tissue and cartilage contain proteins with flexible sulfur bonds, giving the structures flexibility.*
As you age, the flexible tissues in your body tend to lose their elasticity which can lead to sagging and wrinkling skin, as well as less flexible muscles and less comfortable joints.
In addition to bonding proteins, sulfur is also required for the proper structure and biological activity of enzymes.* If you don't have sufficient amounts of sulfur in your body, these enzymes cannot function optimally….
Sulfur also plays other important roles as it …
- Helps detoxification
– Sulfation is a major pathway for detoxification by your liver*
- Supports your body's electron transport system
– As part of iron/sulfur proteins in mitochondria (the energy factories of your cells creating ATP)*
-
Converts vitamin-B thiamine (B1) and biotin
– Which are essential for converting carbohydrates into energy*
- Helps promote normal insulin function
– The insulin molecule consists of two amino acid chains connected to each other by sulfur bridges,
without which insulin cannot perform its biological activity*
- Synthesizes important metabolic intermediates, such as the super-antioxidant glutathione*
Of all the roles sulfur plays, I believe one of the most important is how it can enhance your glutathione levels.*
Sources of dietary sulfur.
Sulfur is derived almost exclusively from dietary protein.
And I believe one of the best sources of sulfur comes from humanely raised, pastured meat.
Meat and fish are considered ‘complete’ as they contain all the sulfur-containing amino acids your body needs in order to produce new protein.
If you don't eat meat, there are other sources of sulfur including organic pastured eggs, coconut oil, and olive oil, as well as most cruciferous vegetables (when grown in soil that contained adequate amounts of sulfur) … Other sources include:
- Brussels sprouts …
- Legumes …
- Asparagus …
- Garlic …
- Kale …
- Onion …
- Wheat germ
Salt Soaking.
A senior scientist at MIT suggests another (relaxing) source of sulfur …
Soak your body in a warm bath with magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) …
Helps compensate and counter act sulfur inadequacies…
Use twice a week with about ½ -1 cup in your bath (relax and enjoy)
This type of bath can help your skin absorb sulfur.
Glutathione.
Glutathione has a unique role as it is present inside every one of your cells.
In fact, it seems to have claimed 'master antioxidant' status by helping all the other antioxidants perform at peak levels.*
... glutathione is not absorbed very effectively.
Plus, glutathione supplements can potentially interfere with your body's ability to produce glutathione naturally over time.
This is where sulfur can provide you with a tremendous health advantage by how it can help boost your glutathione levels.* After age 20, glutathione levels reportedly start decreasing at about 1% a year. Even more reason to make sure you have adequate amounts of sulfur in your body.*
... Checklist for a High-Quality Sulfur Formula
-
MSM must be of the highest quality
– Prefer MSM produced using an extensive distillation process to ensure purity and help eliminate ingredient inconsistencies.
Since sulfur is a prerequisite for this formula, MSM is a key ingredient in that it is made up of 34% sulfur.
-
Look for a low-dosage serving of MSM in the formula
– Keeping the dosage low may help avoid occasional minor side effects possible in larger doses.
-
Include other robust sources of sulfur that can effectively serve as glutathione precursors*
– The potential benefits of glutathione as an extraordinary antioxidant within your body cannot be understated.*
-
Must contain high-quality pure ingredients
–Without this, inconsistency in the formula can occur potentially making the overall benefits unpredictable.
-
Must be produced by a high-quality manufacturer
– High preference for a dedicated facility (particularly with MSM) to help avoid introduction of potential contaminants.
Dr. Mercola's Most Desired MSM Formula.
A targeted list for the creation of a Best product for his members.
-
OptiMSM® (Methylsulfonylmethane)
– I only wanted the best MSM ingredient in my sulfur formula and believe I definitely found it with OptiMSM.
Due to the manufacturer's 4-stage rigorous distillation process, consistency and purity became non-issues.
I also kept the dosage low at 1000 mg per serving.
-
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
– Since this sulfur amino acid is considered the starting point for the production of glutathione in your body,*
it was important to include it in my formula. NAC works as an antioxidant and can also
promote your body's healthy detoxification processes.
-
R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (from Sodium R-Alpha Lipoate)
– Due to its capability to increase glutathione levels and to be readily absorbed when taken orally,
I made sure alpha lipoic acid (ALA) was included in this formula.* Plus, I didn't just go half-way…
instead I took it to another level. Not only is R-alpha lipoic acid (R-ALA) the preferred form of lipoic acid,
the R-ALA that I chose is superior in stabilization and can provide up to 21 times more bioavailability.*
-
Organic Sulfur Vegetable Blend
– Naturally-occurring organo-sulfur compounds can be found in certain vegetables.
One such group of nutrients called isothiocyanates are derived from sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and green cabbage. Allicin, another organo-sulfur compound, is the beneficial phytochemical found in garlic.
-
Commitment to consistency and high quality
– As with the other supplements I offer on my site, MSM is no exception when it comes to my commitment to providing high quality.
Sunlight exposure and exercise can also increase one's intake of sulfur and internal production of glutathione.
The complication is that, particularly since 2003, with the human chemical production and release impact of decreasing ozone layer, the INTENSITY of some of the wavelength energies of sunlight are now (2018) proving to be increasingly hazardous to skin health with shortening durations of exposure. In addition, constructive and healthful exercise activities have become increasingly hazardous since the advent of agricultural use, industrialization, and urbanization. Increasingly dominant behaviors of sedentaryness, high caloric intake, codependency, negative attitudes of fear and competitiveness ... continue to frustrate opportunities and choices of frequent long durations of light to moderate exercise utilizing many muscle groups.

Description:
Maintains Healthy Joint Structure and Function.
- A beneficial form of sulfur
- Reduces joint pain and inflammation
- Helps reduce allergy symptoms and improves nutrient absorption
- Provides an effective dose
MSM or methylsulfonylmethane is a naturally occurring form of organic sulfur found in living organisms that is commonly used to treat osteoarthritis. In humans, sulfur is present throughout the body in several organic compounds and is a factor in a number of different processes in the body. Sulfur is used to produce vital nutrients such as amino acids, some of which are involved in detoxification and pain relief. MSM holds our basic connective tissues together, forming the elemental structure of proteins, and is required for a number of enzymatic functions. This is where MSM’s application in osteoarthritis is so crucial.
MSM is primarily used to reduce the symptoms of knee pain and reduced physical function in osteoarthritis due to its anti-inflammatory and connective tissue supporting activities. It may also help reduce muscle pain and cramps due to its ability to reduce lactic acid production. MSM is also useful for ameliorating the symptoms of seasonal and other types of allergies.
Main Applications:
- Allergies
- Anti-inflammatory
- Parasites
- Detoxificant
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
Medicinal ingredients Per 1 Capsule:
1000 mg --- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
Non-medicinal ingredients:
--- sodium stearyl fumarate.
--- Capsule: hypromellose.
Dosage: (Adult): Take 1 capsule three times daily with food, ...
Use for a minimum of 4 weeks for beneficial effects.
Knee Pain
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot clinical trial which was conducted on fifty men and women, 40-76 years of age with knee OA pain, it was found that 3g of MSM given for 12 weeks in total improved the symptoms of pain and physical function of the participants without any adverse events as compared to the placebo group during the treatment period. MSM also produced improvement in performing activities of daily living when compared to placebo.
In another preliminary study of methylsulfonylmethane, this double-blind small-scale study found that more than 80 percent of those who took 2250 milligrams of MSM daily for six weeks reported an average 82% improvement in pain relief, compared to an 18% improvement reported by those receiving the placebo.
MSM and Allergies
A study conducted to evaluate the efficacy of MSM in the reduction of SAR-associated symptoms found that MSM supplementation at an amount of 2,600 mg/day for 30 days may be efficacious in the reduction of symptoms associated with SAR. Also important to note is that few side effects are associated with the intake of MSM.

The best manufacturers use 4 stage distillation processes that employ heat to separate MSM from manufacturing byproducts, contaminants, and moisture, resulting in a product which is more pure and less prone to degradation. While crystallization adds moisture and then imperfectly spins it away, heat based distillation removes moisture. OptiMSM, the first brand to be made with heat-based distillation, achieves less than 0.1% water content and 99.8% purity.

Customer Comments, selected.
Taste isn't too agreeable but it's worth it. I dissolve it in coffee most of the time. ...
I have tried many different MSM products, and nothing has even come close to relieving my aches and pains like this!
So, first of all, let me say I have been taking MSM for more than 2 decades.
I started back when it was mainly an equine supplement (for horses).
This is now the only brand I use. I recommend it to family & friends, I even give it to my pets.
It is far superior to most out there
1) in effectiveness- the lack of binders/fillers DOES make a difference
2) in safety- optiMSM's purity means no contaminants like arsenic
3) in ease of use- the powder dissolves instantly in anything
4) in value- at just over $22 per lb the cost is miniscule compared to other brands or forms.
I find that both the coarse & fine powder work & dissolve equally well & leave no taste when diluted enough, even in water. The only differences I have seen is that the fine powder works better in topical lotions & creams while the coarse is easier to scoop into empty capsules.
I have also noted that many MSM products that contain fillers or are not optiMSM can cause stomach upset or gas.
Not so with the Kala brand. In fact, I take this to help alleviate GI discomfort from a chronic bowel issue & it works great!
... I began taking it for allergies/asthma & for a congenital skin problem. It has worked wonders.
... It works best when combined with vitamin C.
It is not necessary to take it on an empty stomach or with food, whatever your preference. ...
Even still! I can't imagine ever going for a week without taking MSM.
I used to have incredible fatigue in the morning, no matter how long or late, or little, I slept- the morning has always been hard for me. After about 3 days taking it in the morning and/or afternoon for a boost. I noticed I was getting better sleep at night and I wake up more refreshed. I've been taking it now for 4 months and can't imagine stopping for longer than a week. When I forget to take it, it's not long before an ache in my back or a groggy morning reminds me to start again. ...
My hair skin and Nails grow faster.
I get an energy buzz within minutes after taking it.
Finally I originally began taking it because I broke my ankle and it was not healing. as soon as I began taking it, it soothed the ankle; like an internal epsom salt bath, it eased it, relaxed and softened the tension, and took the edge off of the persistent low level pain that lasted all day long. It quickly reduced inflamation all throughout my body and I believe it speeded the recovery of the tendons and joints. ...
Have tried lots of supplements...this is the only one that helped relieve constipation ... an unexpected but welcome side effect. Dissolves quickly and completely in cold water. Taste is okay with a little added juice. Positive effects with only 1/4 teaspoon daily. ...
... Lately, I have been having a terrible lack of energy, joint pain.. along with muscle pain .. all over.
I bought some Perrier and today I put some powdered Vitamin C in it along with a tablespoon of MSM.
I almost cannot believe the difference in how I feel. My muscle pain AND joint pain have entirely subsided.
My energy is better.. not great.. but definitely better. I feel mentally sharper, more focused. ...

At Bergstrom Nutrition we believe in advancing science to optimize health.
One in three U.S. adults are concerned about their joint health, as evidenced by the growth of the U.S. joint health supplement market (NMI
Research). Currently the market for joint health supplements represents $1.6 billion in sales and continues to show growth (NBJ VoIXV No. 11/12). Consumers concerned about their mobility prefer to use nutritional supplements rather than prescription medication to stop the progression
of issues they are managing (NMI Research). Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is recognized as a leading ingredient in this category -- but not all MSM is created equal.
U.S.-made OptiMSM is a premium form of trademarked MSM that is GRAS-designated and supported by U.S. clinical published research. OptiMSM is manufactured in a GMP-compliant, ISO 9001:2008 registered, FSSC22000 certified MSM production facility. Introduced in 1989, it has
been a leading ingredient for joint health products and the choice of quality brand manufacturers.
The Healthful Benefits of OptiMSM
OptiMSM is a biomimetic source of MSM, identical to that found in nature, comprised of sulfur and methyl groups displaying a variety of health-promoting benefits.
Joint Health
Several pre-clinical and clinical studies support the efficacy of MSM in supporting joint health and range of motion.
Research shows that MSM reduces inflammatory markers that damage cartilage as we age, protecting its integrity.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2006 Mar; 14(3):286-94. Epub 2005 Nov 23
Seasonal Immune Health
MSM may support a healthy immune response to allergens, based on an open-label clinical study and animal studies.

Liver Support
MSM may support liver health and metabolism, based upon an animal study showing elevated liver glutathione after MSM supplementation. Glutathione is a sulfur-rich antioxidant involved in detoxification.

Articles on the Internet are transitory.
The publishers may remove them, change sites, change URLs, or change titles.
For the purpose of maintaining an availability of these articles for myself and you, I have reprinted parts in the relevant monographs with authorship maintained, coding simplified for error-free loading and minimal file size, and a LINK to the original document. Identity trackers and advertising bots have been removed from the original bloated and manipulative coding. NOTHING in writing is absolute; don't treat human opinion, projection, and observation as an Idol. Doing so can kill you, or worse, have you impose abuse on others.
I gathered and researched this data, mediated with the Grace of God through prayer as a benefit in my integrating discovered available digital information which would acquaint me with the overall content related to the health issues. I have found that God is ALWAYS available when we are Reverent in our Asking, open-minded in our Listening, and, Assertive in our Choice of Action. Doctors did not expect me to survive birth. In the past 25 years, medical and health "experts" have cautioned or directed me, more than 14 times, that I had little time left to live, or would die ... because THEY did not understand my challenges, were not motivated to professionally diagnose, or, chose to superstitiously recall as absolute previously flawed training. I am still alive beyond age 70. With the assistance of God, my Personality, the research and a lack of dismissiveness of a number of persons ... I have found resolution to numerous health challenges. This has enabled me to assist many others who had been abandoned, brainwashed, or traumatized. May my experience and successes also empower you. This is one document which you may find helpful as a BASIC introduction to maintaining and improving YOUR health.
