The word is from Old French franc encens ("high-quality incense").

Frankincense is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes.

    genus: Boswellia
    family: Burseraceae
    species:
    • Boswellia sacra (syn: Boswellia bhaw-dajiana),
    • Boswellia carterii33,
    • Boswellia frereana,
    • Boswellia serrata (Boswellia thurifera, Indian frankincense), and
    • Boswellia papyrifera.

Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, or AKBA for short has been found to be a strong anti-cancer compound.

Frankincense oil is extracted from the gum or resin of frankincense or olibanum trees, whose scientific name is Boswellia carteri.

The tree which yields this drug may generally be compared to the pine tree.

The main components of this essential oil are
    • alpha-pinene,
    • actanol,
    • bornyl acetate,
    • linalool,
    • octyl acetate,
    • incensole, and
    • incensole acetate.

    Main Constituents
    1. a-pinene,
    2. limonene,
    3. a-thujene

Frankincense is tapped from the scraggy but hardy trees by slashing the bark, which is called striping, and allowing the exuded resin to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins are called tears.

There are several species and varieties of frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin.
Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species.

Boswellia sacra trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow out of solid rock. The initial means of attachment to the rock is unknown, but is accomplished by a bulbous disk-like swelling of the trunk. This growth prevents it from being ripped from the rock during violent storms. This feature is slight or absent in trees grown in rocky soil or gravel.

The trees start producing resin when they are about eight to 10 years old.
Tapping is done 2 to 3 times a year with the final taps producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic terpene, sesquiterpene and diterpene content. Generally speaking, the more opaque resins are the best quality.

Fine resin is produced in Somalia, from which the Roman Catholic Church purchases most of its stock.

Recent studies have indicated that frankincense tree populations are declining, partly due to over-exploitation.
Heavily tapped trees produce seeds that germinate at only 16% while seeds of trees that had not been tapped germinate at more than 80%. In addition, burning, grazing, and attacks by the longhorn beetle have reduced the tree population. Conversion (clearing) of frankincense woodlands to agriculture is also a major threat.

The resin flows out, and, when hardened, turns into incense, which is gathered and made into lumps.

    Frankincense, Serrata

    • Frankincense, Serrata has a balsamic, rich, warm, slightly spicy, sweet, and woody aroma with more earthy notes.

    • Frankincense, Serrata comes from the Boswellia serrata tree, which is native to much of India and North Africa.
Because of its abundance in India, it is commonly referred to as Indian Frankincense.

    • The Boswellia serrata tree produces a higher amount of resin, which is used to create the essential oil, than other types of the Boswellia tree.

    • Frankincense, Serrata is high in alpha-thujene and has antimicrobial/bacterial properties, which makes it great for cleaning.

    • Frankincense, Serrata is the oldest documented type of Frankincense

    Frankincense, Carterii
    • has a balsamic, rich, slightly spicy, warm, sweet, and woody aroma with a slightly citrusy top note.
    • comes from the Boswellia carterii tree, which is native to East Africa.
    • is high in d-limonene, which is great for general muscles and joint pain relief.
    • is the most well-known and studied type of Frankincense.

Many people believe that Serrata and Carterii are the same type of Frankincense because the tree seeds are identical. While the two plants come from the same seed, the geographical area and climate where the trees grow, when combined with the pH level of the soil and other growth factors, result in two very different species of the Boswellia tree.

Sacred Frankincense is the most potent variety ... and is the most powerful known variety on the market.
Sacred Frankincense may help best in improving the appearance of all skin types while toning and tightening the skin.
Sourced from Oman, where the climate and growing conditions nurture its strength and potency,

Frankincense carterii follows Sacred Frankincense in potency

Frankincense serrata is the least potent of the three.

Because the therapeutic properties are the similar, choosing a variety of Frankincense depends on the strength of the oil you need as well as the price point you prefer.

Frankincense has been a popular ingredient in cosmetics and incense burners for centuries.
It has even been found in the remains of ancient Egyptian and Anglo-Saxon civilizations.
Furthermore, it is closely associated with religious traditions and rites, particularly the Christian tradition.

It is transported on elephants to the Dashi (on the coast), who then load it upon their ships to exchange it for other commodities in Sanfoqi. This is the reason why it is commonly collected at and known as a product of Sanfoqi. ...

The frankincense was first collected in the Hadhramaut ports of Mirbat, Shihr, and Zufar whence Arab merchant vessels shipped it to Srivijaya, before it was then reexported to China. The term "xunluxiang" is derived from the Arab word "kundur". . . According to Li Xun, frankincense originally came from Persia. Laufer refers to the Xiangpu ?? by Hong Chu . . . Zhao Rugua notes: Ruxiang or xunluxiang comes from the three Dashi countries of Murbat (Maloba), Shihr (Shihe), and Dhofar (Nufa), from the depths of the remotest mountains.

Estimates of (recent) annual world production of frankincense vary, but generally are around several thousands tonnes.
More than 82% of the product comes from Somalia, with some frankincense also gathered in adjacent Southern Arabia and Ethiopia, Sudan, and other central African countries.

In Somalia, frankincense is harvested in the

  • Sanaag and Bari regions: mountains lying at the northwest of Erigavo;
  • El Afweyn District;
  • Cal Madow mountain range, a westerly escarpment that runs parallel to the coast;
  • Cal Miskeed, a middle segment of the frankincense-growing escarpment;
  • Karkaar mountains or eastern escarpment, which lies at the eastern fringe of the frankinscence escarpment.

In Dhofar, Oman, frankincense species grow north of Salalah and were traded in the ancient coastal city of Sumhuram, now Khor Rori.

---- a substance that induces sedation by reducing irritability or excitement; central nervous system depressants.

    • tonic, ---- a medicine that invigorates or strengthens

    • uterine, --- of or relating to the uterus or womb.

    • vulnerary
---- A remedy used in healing or treating wounds.

Though commonly mixed with a carrier oil such as saponified coconut oil or jojoba oil and applied topically,
frankincense can also be consumed orally by putting 1 or 2 drops of the oil into a beverage.

    1. Boosts Immune System
Frankincense oil is effective as an antiseptic, and even the fumes or smoke obtained from burning it has antiseptic and disinfectant qualities that eliminate the germs as the smoke filters them out. It can be applied on wounds to protect them from tetanus and becoming septic, without any side effects. It is equally good for internal wounds and protects them from developing infections.

    2. Improves Oral Health
The same antiseptic qualities also make frankincense oil a useful preventive measure against oral issues, like bad breath, toothaches, cavities, mouth sores, and other infections. Look for natural oral care products that include frankincense oil if you enjoy the flavor or aroma, and want to include a strong antiseptic in your health regimen. You can even create your own all-natural toothpaste with frankincense oil and baking soda or a mouthwash with water and peppermint oil.

    3. Astringent Property
The astringent property of Frankincense oil has many benefits.
It strengthens the gums, hair roots, tones and lifts skin, contracts muscles, intestines, and blood vessels, and thereby gives protection from premature loss of teeth and hair. This astringent quality also reduces the appearance of wrinkles and combats the loss of firmness of intestines, abdominal muscles, and limbs associated with age. Above all, frankincense acts as a coagulant, helping to stop bleeding from wounds and cuts. This astringent property also helps relieve diarrhea.

    4. Regulates Menstruation
Frankincense essential oil reduces obstructed and delayed menstruation and delays the advent of menopause.
It also helps to cure other symptoms associated with menses and pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), such as pain in the abdominal region, nausea, headache, fatigue, and mood swings.

    5. Prevents Gas Buildup
Frankincense oil eliminates gas and prevents it from building up in the body.
This removal of excess gas from the intestines also gives relief from associated problems like stomach aches, pain in the abdominal region and chest, abnormal amounts of sweating, uneasiness, indigestion, and many other related conditions.

    6. Reduces Scars
This is an interesting property of Frankincense oil, and since skin care and anti-aging are hot topics these days, this essential oil has become even more important! When applied topically or inhaled, it can make the scars and marks of boils, acne, and pox on the skin fade at a much faster rate. This also includes the fading of stretch marks, surgery marks, and fat cracks associated with pregnancy and delivery.

    7. Promotes Digestion
Suffering from indigestion due to that turkey last night?
A patient with chronic indigestion and acidity? Fed up with those antacids? You should try Frankincense oil instead.
This oil has digestive properties without any side effects, and it facilitates digestion the way most medicines should, unlike common antacids which only suppress the symptoms. This oil speeds up the secretion of digestive juices (gastric juices, bile, and acids) in the stomach and facilitates movement of food through the intestines by stimulating peristaltic motion. This means an all-around improvement in the digestion of food.

    8. Delays Aging
As a cytophylactic, Frankincense oil promotes regeneration of healthy cells and also keeps existing cells and tissues healthy.
When you combine this aspect of frankincense oil with its powerful astringent capabilities, you have a potent anti-aging quality that frankincense oil is often used for. It can help you eliminate sun spots, remove micro-wrinkles around the eyes and cheeks, and generally tone and tighten skin all over your body, while simultaneously replacing old or dying cells with new and healthy ones!

    9. Acts as Tonic
Overall, frankincense essential oil tones and boosts health and is, therefore, considered a tonic.
It benefits all the systems operating in the body, including the respiratory, digestive, nervous, and excretory systems, while also increasing [5] strength by aiding the absorption of nutrients into the body. Furthermore, frankincense oil strengthens the immune system and keeps you strong.

    10. Stimulates Urination
If you think that Lasix and its variants are the only drugs that can help you release water from the body through urination, you are incorrect. These pharmaceutical options may be instantaneous, but not very safe. Frankincense essential oil is a natural and safe alternative. It promotes urination and helps you lose that extra water weight, as well as fats, sodium, uric acid, and various other toxins from the body, with the added advantage of lowering blood pressure. The best part about this is that frankincense essential oil is completely safe and has no adverse side effects.

    11. Reduces Respiratory Issues
It soothes cough and eliminates phlegm deposited in the respiratory tracts and the lungs.
Frankincense essential oil also provides relief from bronchitis and congestion of nasal tract, larynx, pharynx, bronchi, and lungs.
Its antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties also help relax the breathing passages, which can reduce the dangers of asthma attacks, and its antiseptic qualities give it the reputation of being an immune system booster! It also eases body pain, headaches, toothaches, and balances the rise in body temperature commonly associated with colds.frankincense

    12. Relieves Stress
Frankincense oil is very effective as a sedative because it induces a feeling of mental peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and spirituality.
It also awakens insight, makes you more introspective and lowers anxiety, anger, and stress. When you are feeling anxious or if you anticipate some sort of stressful episode, add some frankincense oil to a diffuser or a vaporizer. It promotes deep breathing and relaxation, which can open your breathing passages and reduce blood pressure, moving your mental state back to calmness.

    13. Keeps Uterus Healthy
This oil is very good for uterine health.
Since it regulates the production of the estrogen hormone, it reduces the chances of post-menopause tumor or cyst formation in the uterus, also known as uterine cancer. In terms of the pre-menopausal period, it keeps a woman’s uterus healthy by regulating proper menstrual cycles. It also treats or regulates [8] gynecologic conditions or stressors that can lead to complicated dysfunctions in certain women.

    14. Speeds up Healing
Simply apply a diluted solution of this oil on wounds, or use it after blending with a skin cream, and your wounds will heal faster [9] and will also be protected from infections. This oil is equally beneficial in healing internal wound, cuts, and ulcers.

    15. Anti-Cancer
Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, or AKBA for short has been found to be a strong anti-cancer compound.
With funding from the government of Oman, researchers from the University of Leicester were able to uncover how frankincense may prove to be a safe and effective therapy for women who acquire ovarian cancer. Even in patients with late-stage ovarian cancer – which is exceedingly difficult to treat using conventional cancer treatment methods – the researchers discovered that the AKBA found in frankincense oil demonstrated clear efficacy. Related research into AKBA has shown that it is also effective against other forms of cancer as well, including breast, colon, and prostate cancers.

    16. Other Benefits
Frankincense oil relieves pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis.
It helps to heal boils, infected wounds, acne, circulatory problems, insomnia, and various types of inflammation as well.

Not all oils are created equal.
Because of a lack of industry standards and a lack of regulation on terms such as "natural" or "pure", much of what you find at the drug store is NOT a therapeutic grade of essential oil and may lack real quality or even contain contaminants or adulterants (way more common than you'd think).

A LOT goes into creating a high quality essential oil.
A good brand should follow these guidelines:
    • Proper plant varieties
    • Each plant grown indigenously for the healthiest plant
    • Grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc
    • Harvested with precise timing to ensure peak properties
    • Extracted with proper temp and pressure to preserve oil molecules
    • Third-party testing of every batch
    • Stand behind the internal use of their oils

“True healing oils are expensive to produce and the temptation to commit fraud is rampant in the industry, which is why you want to purchase oils from producers where you can identify the grower, the distiller and the packager. Anywhere along this production chain, from growing soil to bottled oil, tampering can occur to increase profits. To make matters worse, there is no well regulated labelling laws in the United States as there are in Europe.”

Please understand that many oil companies purchase their oils from 3rd party oil distilleries.
These 3rd party distilleries focus on quantity over quality, which means the oils they produce are commonly distilled more than once or in ways to hurry the process – thereby depleting the oil’s therapeutic value.

Oils from companies who purchase 3rd party distilled oils are therefore technically ‘pure’ and ‘organic’ but degraded through distilling short-cuts. A good example of this is using a tea bag multiple times to brew tea.

Very often the label will read something like:
“This product is genuine” … genuine ‘what’? Everything is genuine something.
Sometimes an oil purchased at a health store carries a lable like “100% pure, organic, and natural.”
They may even say “therapeutic grade.” Most of the time, this would be an outright lie, but a legal one since no government agency has defined the term “therapeutic” and no government agency, as yet, regulates the content of labels on essential oils in a way that would remedy such deceptions.

What does 100% Organic, pure, natural, therapeutic really mean?
The 100% quantitative term does not really mean 100%. In some cases 100% can mean as little as 10% of the real stuff while the rest may be colourless, odourless petrochemical, quite OK in the retail trade.

What does organic mean?
“Grown naturally without poisons or chemicals.” To organic chemists, this term means, “composed of carbon compounds.” In other words, by that definition, gasoline is organic, and so is pure rubbing alcohol, and Dioxin, a known carcinogen.

Highly toxic industrial solvents such as benzene, hexane, toluene, xylene, and carbon tetrachloride are organic.
By this definition, every artificial compound synthesized by an organic chemical laboratory is “organic”.
So when these adulterants are added to essential oil, the term “organic” can still legally be used, implying one thing to an organic chemist yet something quite different to an unsuspecting customer.

Some of the dilutants used in essential oils are odourless, colourless petrochemicals (which are cheap).
However, such components can be harmful to one’s health when applied to the skin, taken internally, or inhaled over a period of time. The common availability of such adulterated oils has caused some aromatherapists, who unsuspectingly and routinely use such products, to conclude that it is not safe to use an essential oil directly (neat) without diluting it down to a 2-5% concentration in a neutral fatty base. If such an aromatherapist would seek out a reliable source of truly pure therapeutic grade oils, they would find that applying essential oils neat is perfectly safe (with a few exceptions) and of far greater therapeutic value than using them diluted.

British aromatherapists generally never apply essential oils neat to the skin of fear of toxic reactions.
In fact most British users of essential oils are horrified at the thought of applying pure essential oils to the body and disbelieve that Esther of the Bible (Esther 2:12) really rubbed pure oil of myrrh over her body for six months in preparation for her marriage to the king.

Natural? What is “Natural”?
Any compound that can be produced synthetically by a laboratory that is also found in nature can be legally labelled and sold as “natural”, even though the process by which it was produced was totally unnatural, and the raw products from which it was manufactured may have been petroleum, coal, or natural gas.

Beyond Bio-Chemistry: Energy
The electromagnetic frequencies present in natural oils is absent in the synthetically produced version.
The naturally occurring electromagnetic frequencies cannot be duplicated or manufactured.
Electricity, life force, and subtle energies are beyond chemistry.

A chemist, with all his or her equipment, may not be able to determine the difference between natural and the laboratory produced products, but he discerning powers of the human body can tell the two apart instantly and reacts accordingly.

I ... place two drops under my tongue each morning before brushing my teeth.
It does give me more energy and less anxiety.

Many oils need be used externally only because the purity is not what it need be for internal use.
Many oils are cut with other cheaper ingredients that should not be ingested.
It's important to purchase only the purist oils for this purpose from a company that can be trusted to use the strictest methods for sourcing, extracting oils and ensuring their purity.

You can apply directly on the skin.

A couple of drops under your tongue every night before bed has done wonders.

Yes it have been shown that a good and clean frankinsence oil have a ability to heal skin cancer it is also good for other types of cancer. I have researching it and you have to research it for your type of cancer before useing it. I put the oil into coconut oil -- 4 drops for two big spoons coconut oil and take it on my feets every evening before bedtime. The feet have a good way of absorbing it without any problems with allergy etc. I also put it on my skin where the lymph nodes are around the ovarias.

"What has been most surprising is that the cells we have tested which are resistant to chemotherapy have shown to be more sensitive to this compound, suggesting frankincense may indeed be able to help overcome drug resistance, and lead to an improved survival rate for patients with late-stage ovarian cancer,"
Dr Mark Evans, Kamla's PhD Supervisor and Lecturer in
the University's Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine said.

Even in patients with late-stage ovarian cancer – which is exceedingly difficult to treat using conventional cancer treatment methods – the researchers discovered that the AKBA found in frankincense oil demonstrated clear efficacy.

Here’s what Kamla Al-Salmani, lead author of the paper and a PhD student at the University’s Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine department, had to say about their findings in late 2013:

After a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing cancer cells. Frankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects. This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.

The evidence suggests that frankincense isn’t just a supplemental treatment to go along with chemotherapy and radiation; in some cases it may actually be preferential as a replacement. The reason for this is that frankincense shows demonstrable effectiveness in a few areas where chemotherapy isn’t all that effective, particularly with regards to ovarian cancer. Commenting on the study’s findings, Dr. Mark Evans, who heads the program of which Al-Salmani is a student, explained that certain cancer cell lines that don’t respond to chemotherapy are notably responsive to frankincense.

Top How to INDEX

Application: Aromatherapy. How to INDEX

  • Emotional Stress:
When used as aromatherapy, frankincense may relieve a number of conditions related to emotional stress such as anxiety, disappointment, emotional fatigue and hysteria. To use for aromatherapy, place a few drops in warm water such as a bath, massage with the oil diluted in a carrier oil, or use a special aromatherapy diffuser.

  • Respiratory Congestion:
Further aromatherapy uses of frankincense oil include treatment of congestive conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis.

  • Colds & Allergies:
A few drops of frankincense oil sprinkled on a handkerchief and inhaled regularly can relieve the nasal congestion associated with common colds and allergies.

Application: Essential Oils. How to INDEX

  • Ganglion cysts:
Many people believe in treating ganglion cysts with a twice-daily topical application of a few drops of frankincense essential oil in a carrier oil such as grape seed oil.

  • Skin wounds & inflammation:
You can apply frankincense topically (a few drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil) for treatment of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne scarring, healing of cuts and blemishes. For wounds, apply 2 to 3 drops of frankincense oil to a cold compress and apply directly to the area twice daily.

  • Aging of Skin:
Use a few drops of frankincense oil in daily skin treatment creams to minimize wrinkles and restore elasticity to the skin.

  • Menstrual Cramps:
Relieve menstrual cramps by adding 8 to 10 drops of frankincense essential oil to your bathwater and settling in for a long, soothing soak. For heavy periods, apply 3 to 4 drops of frankincense oil in a carrier oil and massage on the lower abdomen twice a day.

  • Urinary tract infections:
8 to 10 drops of frankincense oil in bathwater can also relieve the burning of urinary tract infections.
It probably goes without saying - soak in the bathwater; don't drink it.

  • Poor Circulation:
To improve circulation, add 4 to 5 drops of frankincense oil to a carrier oil and massage on the affected areas twice daily.

Application: Remove Skin Warts and Moles. How to INDEX
By Sandy Baker

  • Skin Warts:
    • Clean the area well. Allow to dry.
    • Apply a drop of frankincense oil directly on the skin wart or mole.
    • Cover with a large bandage that is absorbent enough to absorb and hold the frankincense against the mole.
    • Reapply a drop of frankincense 2 times per week.
    • Change the bandage each day.

To enhance this remedy, try to eat a diet that will boost the immune system and fight off the skin wart.
This includes a diet rich in cabbage, garlic, limes, broccoli, oranges and bananas.

Another method for using frankincense for skin warts requires the application of frankincense to the area 2 times per day.
Leave the skin exposed rather than covered with a bandage.
After two weeks, the mole or the skin wart should fall off painlessly.

  • Moles:
Moles are sometimes more difficult to treat than skin warts.
Purchase a high quality frankincense essential oil for the treatment.
Several treatment options are available. Create a bath that combines:

    • 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda
    • 1/2 to 1 cup of sea salts
    • 6 drops of lavender essential oil
    • 3 drops of Frankincense essential oil

Add this to a hot bath daily.
The frankincense oil is just enough to react with the skin moles and, over time, it will get rid of them.

Another option is to apply 2 drops of oregano essential oil on the mole.
Do this one or two times per day. The mole will turn black and within a few days, it will fall off.
Once it falls off, apply a drop of frankincense and lavender to the new skin.
This will help to prevent scarring from the mole.

Frankincense may also be applied directly to the mole one or two times per day over a period of 2 weeks.
The mole should blacken and fall off.
Continue to apply the frankincense for several days after the mole is gone to prevent the skin from scarring.

Application: Boswellia and Bronchial Asthma. How to INDEX
By Jeanne Grunert

... Bronchial asthma is an inflammatory condition in which the airways tighten, constricting the flow of air and causing wheezing and shortness of breath. Although many factors such as allergies, dust and pollen can trigger an asthma attack, it is not known why some people get asthma and other do not.

Most conventional treatments for asthma focus on preventing attacks or treating attacks as they occur through the use of inhaled medication. In the study reported in (1998) the European journal, 40 people age 18 to 75 with bronchial asthma were given 300 mg extracts of boswellia twice a day for six weeks. It was a double-blind, placebo controlled study, which is considered the very best kind of study, for it really isolates the effects of the substance studied apart from any preconception of both the researchers and the participants. Approximately 70 percent of the people taking boswellia showed an improvement in their asthma symptoms. Among the control group, who did not take boswellia, 27 percent showed an improvement in their asthma symptoms. The researchers concluded that the test subjects showed a noticeable improvement after taking boswellia.

Application: Ulcerative Colitis Research. How to INDEX
By Jeanne Grunert

... Ulcerative colitis is a debilitating condition in which patients have bouts of severe gastrointestinal distress, including diarrhea, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting. There's no cure for ulcerative colitis or its close cousin, Crohn's disease, so treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and bouts of colitis.

Studies conducted on patients with ulcerative colitis using the herb boswellia indicate it may reduce bouts of ulcerative colitis. In the May 2010 issue of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, as reported on the Sloan-Kettering website, a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study conducted over the course of a year demonstrated that boswellia extracts helped patients remain in remission from ulcerative colitis. In the study, participants took 400 mg extracts of boswellia 3 times a day for 12 months. The results are mixed, showing a slightly better result among the people taking boswellia in reducing bouts of ulcerative colitis, but not enough to make researchers recommend this herb as a treatment option. Nevertheless, enough interest in the results indicates the potential for future research studies.

Steam Distilled from tree resin obtained by exudation of the bark.

Mixes well with balsam fir needle oil, myrrh oil, orange oil and sandalwood oil blend.

This blend is already pre-diluted and ready for use.
