1. Sugar ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar#cite_note-Ponting_2000_353-16

Biopolymers of sugars are common in nature.
Through photosynthesis plants produce glucose and convert it for storage as an energy reserve in the form of other carbohydrates such as starch, or (as in cane and beet) as sucrose (table sugar). Starch, consisting of two different polymers of glucose, is a readily degradable chemical energy stored by cells, convertible to other types of energy.

Cellulose is a polymer of glucose used by plants as structural component.

DNA and RNA are built up of the sugars ribose and deoxyribose.

Monosaccharides in a closed-chain form can form glycosidic bonds with other monosaccharides, creating disaccharides (such as sucrose) and polysaccharides (such as starch). Enzymes must hydrolyse or otherwise break these glycosidic bonds before such compounds become metabolised. After digestion and absorption. the principal monosaccharides present in the blood and internal tissues include glucose, fructose, and galactose. Many pentoses and hexoses can form ring structures. In these closed-chain forms, the aldehyde or ketone group remains unfree, so many of the reactions typical of these groups cannot occur.

Sugar is an informal term for a class of edible crystalline carbohydrates, mainly sucrose, lactose, and fructose[1] characterized by a sweet flavor. In food, sugar almost exclusively refers to sucrose, which primarily comes from sugar cane and sugar beet. Other sugars are used in industrial food preparation, but are usually known by more specific names -- glucose, fructose or fruit sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc. ...

Sugar, because of its simpler chemical structure, was once assumed (without scientific research) to raise blood glucose levels more quickly than starch, but results from more than twenty studies demonstrate that sugar and starch cause blood glucose to rise at similar rates. This finding showed that controlling all carbohydrates is necessary for controlling blood glucose levels, the idea behind carbohydrate counting. Experts now agree that eating too much sugar does not cause diabetes. Excessive calories from sugar, however, can lead to obesity, which may increase the risk of diabetes. Sugars such as sucrose are known to contribute to tooth decay, and it is impossible to develop cavities in the absence of fermentable carbohydrates. The role of starches is disputed. Lower rates of tooth decay have been seen in hereditary fructose intolerance.

Sugar was produced in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times.
It was not plentiful or cheap in early times -- honey was more often used for sweetening in most parts of the world. During his campaign in India, Alexander the Great was surprised to taste the sweetening agent that was different from honey.

..sugar remained relatively unimportant until the Indians discovered methods of turning sugarcane juice into granulated crystals that were easier to store and to transport. Crystallized sugar was discovered by the time of the Imperial Guptas. Indian sailors, consumers of clarified butter and sugar, carried sugar by various trade routes. Traveling Buddhist monks brought sugar crystallization methods to China. ...In South Asia, the Middle East and China, sugar became a staple of cooking and desserts.

During the Muslim Agricultural Revolution, Arab entrepreneurs adopted sugar production techniques from India and then refined and transformed them into a large-scale industry. Arabs set up the first sugar mills, refineries, factories and plantations. The Arabs and Berbers spread the cultivation of sugar throughout the Arab Empire and across much of the Old World, including Western Europe after they conquered the Iberian (Spanish) Peninsula in the eighth century AD. ...

Crusaders brought sugar home with them to Europe after their campaigns in the Holy Land, where they encountered caravans carrying "sweet salt". Early in the 12th century, Venice acquired some villages near Tyre and set up estates to produce sugar for export to Europe, where it supplemented honey as the only other available sweetener. ...

In August 1492 Christopher Columbus stopped at La Gomera in the Canary Islands, for wine and water, intending to stay only four days. He became romantically involved with the Governor of the island, Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio, and stayed a month. When he finally sailed she gave him cuttings of sugarcane, which became the first to reach the New World.

More recently it is manufactured in very large quantities in many countries, largely from sugar cane and sugar beet. In processed foods it has increasingly been supplanted by corn syrup.

2. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) wrinkle fertilizer.

Known as high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), this synthetic sweetener masquerades as being natural and healthy. But a chemical reaction discovered in 1914 by the French chemist Louis Camille Maillard proves otherwise. Every time you consume the corn syrup, it acts as wrinkle fertilizer, courtesy of "glycation" - the process by which sugars like HFCS bind to amino acids in the bloodstream and become Advanced Glycation End (AGE) products. This class of toxins has been linked to inflammation, insulin resistance, diabetes, vascular and kidney disease, and Alzheimer's.

Hardly natural, HFCS is made in a lab.
Corn syrup is chemically altered in such a way that it becomes "high-fructose" corn syrup." This leads to a much higher rate of AGE production than occurs with plain old sugar. As sure as night follows day, AGE products bind to collagen, causing it to get twisted and tangled. This shows up as age spots, wrinkles, and everything else that makes skin look old and crumbly. ...

High Fructose Corn Syrup & Mercury in Meat?
Newsletter, US Wellness, 2009-03-22

Many commercially sold meat products are now pumped with high fructose to improver the flavor. Pork is a prime example. If you are in Wal-Mart this week, check the meat case and see how many items carry high fructose corn syrup on the label.

Mercury was found in nearly 50% of tested samples of commercial high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a January article in the scientific journal, Environmental Health. A separate IATP study detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled ingredient, including products by Quaker, Hershey's, Kraft and Smucker's.

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms," said IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author in both studies. "Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply. Find additional background material at IATP's homepage.

4. Sucralose, personal experience.
by John R. Sennett

On Friday, August 26th, 2005, I purchased 2 containers of EarthShake (it could have been any of dozens of popular whey protein powders), a protein powder meal replacement. I was hoping to find a balanced nutrition product. Aware of the reported dangers of, and avoiding Aspertame for many years, I asked the health food store advisor if she was aware of a product which did not contain Aspertame or other synthetic sugars, such as sucralose. She was unsure and while she was looking I noticed an introductory sale on a product called EarthShake.

I quickly looked at the Ingredients list on the container and it read:
"Whey protein concentrate, Whey protein isolate, Egg Albumin, Calcium Cassinate, Hydolyzed Whey, Protein Isolate, Natural and Artifical Flavors." Not noting any artificial sugars, I rejoiced and looked no further, bought 1 of each of 2 flavors and went about my hectic schedule.

I began using EarthShake on the Saturday as the major part of 1 of my 2 daily meals.
I am recovering from a severe combination of chronic illnesses and had been intensely chemical detoxing for the previous 6 months after getting rid of mercury and the parasites it encouraged over the previous 18 months. I had had my best healthful day in the previous year on August 13th, 2 weeks earlier.

Within 12 hours I began a downward spiral in my health which would continue until I found the source, 5 days later, and discontinued it. The product mixed well in water and tasted good. Ironically, I complemented the store attendant several days later.

My SYMPTOMS developed quickly to include all of the following:
Large raised smooth red and itchy welts at three locations in major lymph drainage areas (one in the right armpit, the others in the groin). No herbal or pharmaceutical ointment for fungi, bacteria, psoriasis, etc. had any influence on these. I found that the only thing that offered any relief was a Monochromatic Red Laser device I had, called a Light Shaker. I was taking few supplements at the time and my restrictive diet had not changed in several weeks.

Other symptoms throughout included:
seeing spots, bleeding, increased constipation, and bloating ... such that my belly ballooned abnormally for the foods I was eating, and my peristaltic action reduced from a normal level.

The BLEEDING began within beginning EarthShake by 18 hours.
At first I passed about 1/8th of a cup of blood, anally, when going to the bathroom.
By the second day, the amount had increased to 1/4 cup. By the 3rd day, it was up to 1/2 cup.
I was considering going to hospital emergency as I had not ever had such symptoms since a 4 month period in 1999, when I had hemorrhoids and had them surgically corrected. For the 4th and 5th day, I passed as much or more blood. I kept wondering what had changed that could have prompted this and the other symptoms to appear. The only thing different was the EarthShake.

On the 4th and 5th day, I experienced chest pain and stomach cramps, and nausea --- in addition to the above standard ones. With the expansion of my abdomen and the low amount of food bulk that I had taken in, it was evident that my liver had swollen, and possibly my spleen and kidneys also.

I revisited the store and asked for any information on whey composition.
I borrowed and copied two information sheets on EarthShake.
When I got home, there I found Sucralose included in the listing on the sheets.
I began to wonder what the side effects might be of Sucralose. I took a quick look on the Internet and within about 10 seconds found many articles noting, and documenting the influence it had made on many other people. There were even lawsuits noted and a defence lawyer who was asking for a retrial of a convicted murderer on the basis that she had been influenced by using Sucralose!

I had almost gone to hospital emergency on each of the previous 3 days due to the symptoms and the weakness I had felt. I was so disoriented and lacking focus and energy on days 4 and 5 that I could do little work. With the previous experiences of time wasted going to doctors and hospitals, I concentrated on determining the causes myself and correcting them ... a strategy I had found most constructive in the past.

Yes, Sucralose WAS mentioned on the EarthShake containers -- in the French language version of the Ingredients, and, in the Nutrition Facts (??). I seldom read the Nutrition breakdowns provided as every manufacturer seems to have a different manner of stating them and their relevancy differs for every individual.

I STOPPED using EarthShake immediately.
Within 12 hours, the bleeding stopped!

ALL of the few articles I had found and read stated that Sucralose accumulates in every cell of the body and particular efforts must be made to detox it. Following their examples and some that I had learned to be effective over the previous challenging years, I intensively detoxed for the next 2 days. During that time, I was so weak and tired that I could do no work and could scarcly leave my bed.

TO begin DETOXING, I ate a stew of onions, garlic, celery, hot peppers, olive oil, coconut oil, and spices.
I followed this with NHF Glutamax XP Immuno, Milk Thistle extract and tablets, Bowel Cleanse, Pascotox, Pascalite, and a lot of fresh tomatoes with vinegar and Krystal Salt (nanominerals). I also add to this extra COQ10, NAC, thymus extract, enzymes, and B vitamins. These, plus the use of an Infrared HotHouse Dome finally got my bowels moving, my lymph clearing, my liver decreasing in size, and my mind clearing.

It has already cost me hundreds of dollars in detoxing materials and lost productivity by taking 5 or 6 servings of Sucralose laced EarthShake. It could have been ANY product to which sucralose had been added in comparable quantity, and for anyone with a less than perfect immune system and health.

I find it unbelievable that any company in 2005 would introduce a Health Product containing Sucralose and that any health food store owner or employee would be so easily duped into encouraging its use. We have so polluted our food supply that health now depends upon supplementation and the purchase of meal replacements --- unless you can grow everything organically yourself on virgin soil. Unfortunately, even these options are being made complicated.

5. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Sugars have a reality which if contradictory.
They can be beneficial when you physically need them.
They can be destructive when they overburden your body.
They can be hazardous when they encourage us to develop patterns around their consumption and then reward us with muddled thinking, and, exhaustion.

We change Reality with our awareness, beliefs, perceptions, responses, and reactions. Alive, we contribute either benefits or losses to the future for ourselves and the universe. God gave you Choice.
A Gift denied is an expression of rejection and hate.
A Gift respected is a gift used wisely.
