What is the best food for a long endurance sport?
Dr. Eric Serrano M.D., M.S., B.C., interview
... energy from good healthy fats provides the best fuel for long term endurance events. Your body will burn the fat energy more efficiently and will then turn to burning your own fat for energy more easily.
If you are eating carbs and sugars, then your liver can only store so much as energy in the form of glycogen, and after approximately 30 minutes or so, you then run out of the glycogen stored in the liver from carbs and 'hit the wall'.
I recommend high omega 3 and CLA rich pemmican from U.S. Wellness Meats. The high quality fat source will fuel your body with plenty of energy to spare.

How do I improve my total cholesterol numbers?
Dr. Eric Serrano M.D., M.S., B.C., interview
... I am 51 years old, female and post menopausal.
My weight is stable -- not skinny -- but stocky and muscular. I have no medical conditions, and I take no prescription medicine.
My doctor told me that my good cholesterol cancels out my bad cholesterol, however, my total cholesterol is high and he would like to see it lower.
** Yes, your numbers are fantastic and I agree with your physician about the HDL and LDL. Your diet is actually very good, but I hope you are taking fish oils because you are not consuming enough essential fats in your diet and you require greater amounts than the one provided by grass-fed beef.
Joan to answer the question why your cholesterol is high, takes a little more than what you gave history wise but here is the reason why your cholesterol is "high". The reason is, because you are menopause and your body is reading that is low in certain hormones like estrogen and progesterone, so I am sure at one point in time you were having hot flashes or other symptoms related to menopause, and as you remember those hormones, estrogen and progesterone, come from cholesterol; consequently, the body will make extra cholesterol so it can manufacture more cholesterol derived hormones, but in your case it is not doing it, so it keeps making extra cholesterol.
[To improve this diagnosis] I will check your thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA and if you are under stress, I will check your cortisol levels, which will show most of them low to borderline low and that will explain why your cholesterol is 284.
Joan you must consume nuts so you can have other good fats.

The current standard American diet is too high in Omega-6's fats and way too low in Omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the keys to help stave off this dreaded disease. Combined with a healthier, active lifestyle and a diet full of anti-oxidant rich foods and high Omega-3 grass-fed meat, we can reduce the odds of Alzheimer's disease. ...
Protein supports growth and repair of muscle, bone and other body tissues and can help to promote satiety. While looking for protein choices, it's important to know that animal sources of protein, such as raw, grass-fed dairy, grass-fed meats such as lamb, goat and beef, eggs, free range poultry and high omega 3 fish, are defined as high-quality or "complete" proteins because they contain the right proportion of amino acids essential for the body's functioning.

.. any research about grass-fed beef and benefits to men from a hormone basis?
Dr. Eric Serrano M.D., M.S., B.C.,
Being in my early 40's, I was wondering if there is any research about grass-fed beef and benefits to men from a hormone basis? Does it do anything for the testosterone level or the HGH levels?
Thanks, Marty
Yes, I have information in meat and hormones but it was done with conventional meat.
Meat with conventional source increases insulin levels, testosterone levels and nothing in growth hormone.
.. monounsaturated fats increase testosterone.
Weight lifting also increases testosterone and aerobics decreases them.
GH is not affected by meat, but it might increase GH if consumed without carbohydrates.
Marty, I want you to understand that the increase in insulin was done in diabetics and with non organic meat, although I think in a "normal person" it will not increase insulin, but it will increase your testosterone levels. If i wanted to increase my testosterone levels Marty i would do these:
- 1-lift weights, include high volume low rest between sets
(if clients want to know more about lifting ask John and I will write more articles)
- 2-increase your fat intake, especially saturated and monounsaturated fats and decrease polyunsaturated fats
- 3-use butter instead of canola oil or corn oil
- 4-use fat loading days in combination with workout days and also include carbohydrate loading days
- 5-decrease aerobics
- 6-load with fish oils, no flax seed oil
- 7-decrease sugar intake
Assisting Pancreatic-insulin health.
Dr. Eric Serrano M.D., M.S., B.C.,
QUESTION:
I have had diabetes for 31 years without any known complications, but I often feel tired after eating meat, grass-fed and regular. Actually, many foods trigger a tired response.
Can you elaborate on how to get my pancreas checked, the foods I should be eating that contain enzymes, what to avoid, and other steps that I should consider?
ANSWER:
The first thing is to check for food allergies, and the second step is to check your enzymes by doing a stool analysis by doctors data or any other reputable lab which analyzes enzymatic stools, and compare them with blood levels. Any Doctor can order those tests.
Also start your own enzymatic supplementation by taking enzymes daily and also taking vinegar with your meals.
Avoid hydrogenated fats or fats from cheese that are not organic and avoid canola or corn oil.
I would suggest you start making your own kefir, which is very easy by buying your own bacteria and adding raw milk.
Assisting mild ocular rosacea (blepharitis and styes).
Do you have any dietary advice for someone with rosacea and mild ocular rosacea which is mainly causing blepharitis and styes, but thankfully, no vision damage?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Most common reasons for rosacea are allergies or lack of certain vitamins.
Start by eliminating wheat and dairy, then make sure that your diet is very low in sugars (including starchy carbs and high fructose corn syrup), and very high in GLA, which is an anti-inflammatory fat that will help with the rosacea. Or, you can start eating more nuts, if you are not allergic to them. Organic, grass-fed butter is also very high in Gamma Linoleic Acid, as well as Conjugated Linoleic Acid.
Another great option would be a combination of GLA, CLA and olive oil.
The only one in the market is alpha omega-3, that I designed about 9 years ago, you can call Mark Harmon at 419 230 9853 and he will be happy to help you or call Nathan Doerfler at 614 834 4372 which is a herb store and they will also help you.
Keep in mind, that rosacea is also worsened by alcohol or fermented drinks, including beer and wine, so be aware of it.
This is also one of the few times that I use an antifungal in my practice because 22% of those with rosacea do respond to antifungals, but the diet must be low in sugar. I use Lamisil, or you can also use oregano, ginger and garlic together to try to clean the fungal infection, which most likely resides in the GI tract.
Nutritional & supplement(s) for .. eczema.
Diet is the must important factor on the skin and the skin is the window to your health. The worse your skin is, the worse your health is. Of course, this is in addition to your gastrointestinal system.
The first thing I tell any body that has eczema is to find out what the person is allergic to, by doing an elimination diet or getting tested for allergies. I also start the patient on vinegar, and it could be balsamic or apple cider, one teaspoon three times per day, and if these two do not work, then I add probiotics and I use Klaire or Orthobiotics.
If you want to contact them, the phone numbers for ortho is (800) 924-0824,
ask for the probiotics and use a code SERR10 or
Klaire is (888) 488-2488 and ask for the complete brand, and the code is 614.
... the top three foods that you need to start with are WHEAT, DAIRY and EGGS, and just in case, Peanuts also.
Statin drugs and Cholesterol.
Part of the US Wellness Grassland Beef newsletter, 2008-12-14
You asked me to talk about statins which include the best seller Lipitor, and Crestor, Zocor and others. They are classified as statins because they block the manufacturing of cholesterol by blocking an enzyme that is absolutely necessary in the formation of cholesterol. The only problem with this, is that it also blocks the manufacturing of CoQ10 which is absolutely necessary for the human body, and cholesterol is also necessary for the body or you will die. I repeat, without cholesterol you will die.
Cholesterol is in every cell, and allows the body to make hormones, in this case sex and stress hormones, such as: testosterone, estrogen, cortisol DHEA, etc. When we block the formation of cholesterol, some where down the chain we are also blocking the formation of these hormones. I want to bring a new theory to the cholesterol synthesis, and it will be the first time you hear this, but I am taking credit for this:
Has the medical community ever discussed that the cholesterol in the blood is high maybe because our system is not making the appropriate amount of hormones, and for that reason it has to make extra cholesterol to catch up -- or is it that our body doesn't have the necessary enzymes, minerals or vitamins to continue the synthesis of the hormones from cholesterol and the body keeps reading, hey we don't have enough hormones . . . keep making cholesterol until we catch up?
Let me make this even more clear.
Let's suppose you order 4 tires for your car, but you never got them, so you order again, and still the tires don't come and then you order again. Then suddenly you get all those tires at the same time, but you are now missing the nuts to be able to use them!
Statins are drugs that are going to continue to be used in medicine because the amount of money and publicity surrounding them, so the best thing to do is educate people in the proper use of diet and exercise and a healthy lifestyle, and a balanced life style.
Statins cause:
- joint pain
- it might cause or worsen Congestive heart failure
- increase the chances of memory loss
- re duces CoQ10
- reduces hormone output
- can cause problems when combined with grapefruit juice
- depression
Hair loss factors, mediation.
Part of the US Wellness Grassland Beef newsletter, 2008-12-28
I'm a 54 year old female, and in the past 3 years I've been through 6 doctors trying to discover why I keep losing hair. No one can help. I normally eat as organic as possible, as often as possible.
The most recent massive hair loss started in August with a permanent. Since then every time I wash my hair, handfuls fall out and strands in between washings. I'm scared to death that I'm going to lose it all. I took a look in the mirror at the back of my head this week and there are white patches all over. I don't know what to do and no one has helped me. I use a shampoo called CHI specifically to prevent hair loss and it doesn't work any longer. I'm in menopause and a week ago, started Bioidentical Hormone Therapy. It's so expensive that I think I can only do one round.
The Dr. ordered a prescription for Bi-est vaginal cream and progesterone caps. The next is testosterone cream.
I don't exercise because I come home from work exhausted. I'm overweight for my frame, I'm 136 lbs small frame 5'5" and was 121 lbs 7 weeks ago while dieting ... as soon as I stop the weight jumps back on me no matter what I do. I'm so frustrated. I've tried everything and so far nothing works. Current medications are:
Armor thyroid (hypothyroidism)
CoQ
A homocysteine formula tablet
Krill Oil
Selenium 200 mg
I throw Vit C and E in there here and there.
I work a stressful job. ...
... You are worried about your hair loss, but it would be helpful to get more information about sleep, diet specifics and stress. However, I do have some recommendations that hopefully will help you with your hair and your stress.
Reasons to lose hair:
- low iron
- hormonal imbalance
- low vitamin B
- too much zinc
Here are some recommendations:
- Make sure you have the right labs and your lab values would be helpful to know
- Try an antifungal shampoo like Nizoral shampoo
- Increase your intake of good fats, especially GLA
- ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 to omega 9, Take a close look at the.
- Biotin and vitamin D are very important.
- medications: What other are you taking?
- estrogen, Too much, or to little can cause hair loss.
- testosterone, Too much, can cause hair loss, or to little DHEA.
- Any mercury, lead or iron overload?
- Fatigue can be related to too much sugar, food allergies or too little thyroid or too much estrogen
- Dieting ups and downs may also be a culprit because of not enough of the good fats.
- B-complex supplements are super important.
- Hormones:
Your biggest problem is your fatigue, and I don't care what hormones you take, if you don't fix your diet, nothing will help, and it seems to me that you are not eating correctly.
- Probiotics, being low can also cause hair loss.
Vegetarian, Fat, and with PCOS.
March 19, 2009 US Wellness Newsletter
I have PCOS, trouble with weight gain, irregular menstruation and infertility. ...
Dear R.G.:
I told John that I hate vegetarians because they are missing vitamins and minerals. I see so many of them in my office with difficulties including PCOS, iron deficiency and B12 with severe depression.
R. G. to answer your question, I need more information.
For example, what kind of vegetarian are you? Do you eat pasta or wheat. I see you added eggs and dairy as most vegetarians do not eat vegetables but a lot of grains. R. G. the worst condition for a PCOS person is hyperinsulinemia and high androgens, which end up making you fat and actually will make it difficult getting pregnant. R. G. you also added soy, which makes your situation worse by gaining weight and also maybe changing your periods and even making you depressed. I am going to make some recommendations base on the information that you given me:
1. you are going to continue gaining weight if you don't stop consuming carbohydrates all the time
2. start adding supplements that have good fat in them, like nuts etc, and if you don't consume grass-fed butter butter or good fish sources
buy Alpha omega-3 from Scott at 614 596 7994
3. add chromium pycolinate and gymnema sylvestre to your diet
4. add one to three tablespoons of organic vinegar per day
5. start lifting weights so you become more insulin sensitive and you can start losing weight; sorry, aerobics do burn calories but don't add muscle
6. raw is good but again if you are consuming carbohydrates in large quantities you are going to continue gaining weight
7. 60% of my PCOS patients are fructose intolerant, yes fruits, and juices, sorry, keep fructose low
8. if consuming carbohydrates, make sure that they come from sweet potatoes, rice, vegetables, and corn and consume 80% of them after your workout
9. Glucophage is one of the greatest medications available for patients with PCOS, it helps you with insulin, and weight gain.

PBC or primary biliary cirrhosis, autoimmune disease.
March 29, 2009 US Wellness Newsletter
... a chronic disease of the bile ducts eventually leading to cirrhosis of the liver.
PBC or primary biliary cirrhosis is a very hard disease to treat, and with a very poor prognosis. It is an autoimmune disease, but we don't know what starts the disease, but we must assume that it is our own body attacking the liver and if we assume that something is wrong with our immune system, then we should turn it off. I don't want to give you the wrong idea that these guide lines can work miracles, but it is worth a try because nothing else seems to work.
First thing is to start the patient on free form amino acids, like Muscle Synthesis and MR100%, or Density by Beverly International, the only two supplements that are protein sources in the simplest form, so the liver can use them without digesting them and they can be incorporated into proteins as the liver needs. But before I would do this, the most important step is to eliminate any allergens or any causes that will activate the immune system, and you should start with food, and the list should be:
- no wheat
- no dairy products; however, this does not include grass-fed butter
- no peanuts or peanut butter
- no eggs
- no tomatoes
You must also rotate the diet and try to change the sources of proteins so the body doesn't develop allergies or keep the intake of free form amino acids high by ingesting the supplements above, (note that I do make money if you purchase Muscle Synthesis or MR100 but not Density,
the phone number is 1 (614) 596 7994).
In addition, to keep the digestive system working optimally,
I will use digestive enzymes
like Creon, or Ultrase MT12 or 18,
with each meal and I would also add probiotics,
either from Klaire by going to their website -- http://www.klaire.com/
or calling the 1 800 number and using the code 614 and the name is COMPLETE,
or Ortho Molecular by calling 1800 842 0924, use the code "serr10"( I do make money but I don't care, I just think these two products are excellent) and the last thing we will do is to
add liver support by adding:
1. 600 mgs of glutathione
2. 200 mgs of glycine (no need if you buy MR100)
3. Colostrum 300 mgs
4. Lactoferrin 100 mgs
5. Milk thistle 300 mgs
6. N-acetyl cysteine - 600 mgs or try Cerefolin NAC 2 tablets per day
What causes rosacea ?
May 10, 2009 US Wellness Newsletter
The most common reasons for rosacea are:
- drinking alcohol
- lack of probiotics
- lack of acid in your stomach
- lack of digestive enzymes
- food allergies
- gall bladder disease or removal
Go through this list and check what you have and you will find your answers. By the way, you will have other symptoms like bloating, burping, reflux, gas or sleepiness-not all of them at the same time but here and there. ...
Reasons for Abdominal Fat.
US Wellness, newsletter, May 31, 2009
the must common reasons for abdominal fat are high carb diet, stressed life-style, back injuries, low DHEA, and low thyroid.
Thyroiditis Treatment options.
US Wellness, newsletter, May 31, 2009
I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which has recently been getting worse in spite of increasing my Levoxyl dose. I can't take any higher a dose now because it causes terrible episodes of tachycardia and insomnia so bad I have to take 75mg of Benadryl just to get some sleep.
Now my cholesterol, which was under control with diet, is through the roof, my cortisol levels are high, my blood sugar is erratic. Consequently, I'm craving carbs and I'm gaining weight again like I did when my thyroid first went bad.
In addition, my hair is falling out, my skin is desert-dry, my muscles hurt and feel like lead, I'm tired all the time, my brain is foggy, my short term memory is shot, and my stress tolerance is next to nothing, so my mood is volatile, to say the least.
I realize that trying to treat the thyroid as an isolated organ is futile, and I need to find valid information about thyroid dysfunction and how it's related to the rest of the body, but there is so much confusing and conflicting information out there. Can you direct me to reliable, accurate information I can bring to my doctor? ...
I really feel bad because you must feel bad and without hope. I am going to try to help you because I actually see a lot of people in my office with thyroiditis.
Theresa, you must take this condition by the horns and control it, but it must be done slowly and you must make some sacrifices, the first one is diet control. Sorry, you are not going to get better without taking this first step.
Food allergies, 100%
Patients with thyroiditis have food allergies, 100% of them have problems with certain foods and the three most common are dairy, wheat and eggs, so you must start by eliminating these foods or getting tested for it.
Carbohydrates
Now, you must also eliminate carbohydrates from your diet because it sounds like you are also having hypoglycemic events. To do that, your plate should have two servings of vegetables, one serving of protein and fat, including nuts, and occasionally certain fruits, which initially should be limited to grapefruit, avocados, lemons, berries, and tomatoes.
TESTS
You must also have a lead, mercury, vitamin D, B12, boron, Tsh, free T3, free T4, cortisol, and DHEA levels checked.
Omega 3 oils.
I would also add alpha omega 3, (call scott at 614-596-7994) four per day for 7 days then 3 per day, and a product by standard process name of thytrophin PMG, take about 8 per day, and prolamine iodine, about three per day, on an empty stomach.
Medication.
You must also talk to your doctor and let him know that it is not working for you and that you would like to change your dosage or medication to armour thyroid. I don't know what your dosage of levoxyl is, so I can't make any other recommendations, but I would immediately do that. In addition, your tachycardia can be leading to your hypoglycemic events and not your thyroid.
Theresa, if you don't make all these changes you will end up having surgery.
By the way, the benadryl works, because it helps with your allergies.
Amino Acid quality in supplements.
US Wellness, newsletter, June 28, 2009
QUESTION:
... Mark Harmon's name and number regarding the aminos you developed ... I have used a product with 23 Freeform Crystalline Amino Acids as primarily pre- and post-workout and on non-workout days twice a day (as a meal replacement) in between my three meals. I just don't feel like eating an additional 2 plus meals with my schedule. I am simply trying to be lean and gain muscle.
I am interested in your Muscle Synthesis but notice it does not contain as many amino acids. Is there a benefit to taking what I do now over yours, and if not, could you explain why ? At face value it would seem that a full spectrum would be better, but I have not done any research and always have an open mind and ask questions rather than assume an incorrect conclusion.
ANSWER:
When I was working on my formula, I looked at muscle biopsies, amino acid concentrations of different sources of proteins including liver, beef, milk, whey, casein etc.. If you compare the proteins, they have certain ratios which are different, and which actually do different things in the body. After two years, and spending a lot of money, I came up with the formula after trial and error with athletes and found the ones that gave them the best results. You cannot assume that just because it has all the aminos, it is better. Casein and whey will be the same, it is not only the amount, but the ratios and structure of the proteins.
The reason mine is better than the other is simple -- results.
Try this: take a week off your aminos, and then try mine for a month, but do not change your workouts, eating habits, sleeping or anything, and let me know what happens. Then do the same again and take a week off and go back to your brand and let me know what you think. Amino acids, free-form are very expensive, so it they are very cheap, beware. ...
Grave's disease treatment
US Wellness, newsletter, July 5, 2009
QUESTION:
Do you have a natural treatment for Grave's disease? I am a 50-year-old female.
My TSH is .003; thyroxine, free (FT4) is 2.18; T3, free is 5.1; anti-thyroglobulin is < 20.
I live in Canada, but will be staying in the US for a journalism assignment for the next 4 months.
My only symptom is a racing heart.
I am already eating brassica vegetables 2-3 times a day and have increased my soy intake as per the recommendation of the nutritionist in my MD's office in Canada.
Graves is a thyroid problem that is hard to treat because it depends on the length and the cause and I don't know either of those answers. I would stop caffeine and any stimulants such as soda or decongestants. I would also stop eating soy because it affects your labs and your thyroid, and not in a good way.
Check your lead, mercury, antibodies and the rest of the hormones, not just the thyroid levels. In addition, find out what foods you are allergic to because they will also affect your thyroid, and start a good thyroid glandular from standard process or thorne.
