HEALTH, TEETH, and,
MERCURY TOXICITY
A Personal Experience, 6.
REMOVAL
WHEN YOU ARE DESPERATE because symptoms appear to be terminal and you know the solution is not complicated nor procedurally difficult, it is easy to feel pushed to take actions you would otherwise never consider. Spiritual Guidance, which would not likely provide the same direction for other people, affirmed that I should try several approaches. I cannot provide "real" examples and real empathy to a situation if I have not tried it myself.
DRAMATIC OR INTENSE ACTIONS can be constructive in some cases when the change leads to fundamental improvement without substantial risk. I chose to go to an Emergency Dental Clinic. From previous and consistent feedback, I knew that action would do nothing unless it looked like an emergency to them. So, I did my best to create one by trying to pull out my two molars myself. But, I was also Guided as to just how far to go in that endeavour.
SOME THINGS DON'T CHANGE.
Like the first time around, I had difficulty in locating a dentist who would help.
I went to dentist #1 who had replaced the broken amalgam in my earlier toxicity experience with plastic. I was exceedingly sick that day with headache and muscle pains distracting me at their worst for months. I told him that my upper rear molars were killing me and that I wanted them extracted. Extraction rather than filling was a choice to save him time and save Social Services money on an emergency service.
EMERGENCY DENTAL SERVICES for the poor are actually covered by private insurance which dentists have been forced to take out by the Ontario government. While all dentists must have the insurance, their premiums are adjusted according to the number of claims they submit. That is why some dentists will not accept ANY emergency dental work from Social Services recipients. Here, I made the mistake of mentioning that my teeth were to come out because mercury amalgam toxicity was indicated. That went over like a lead balloon.
DENTIST #1 FLATLY DENIED that mercury amalgams were ever a problem.
I noted that I had experienced a similar problem before which had been corrected by amalgam removals ... he seemed not to hear. We wasted each other's time for several hours, mostly me waiting, while x-rays were taken, he tapping all my teeth, and making a better fit between two. I should have walked out when he stated his committed ignorance. Instead, my Ego just kept hoping he would do SOMETHING constructive and my misery would end. Of North American dentists, as many as 96% still specialize in mercury amalgam dental fillings. Most of those are unaware of the SCIENTIFIC research from their OWN industry exposing mercury toxicity.
AMALGAMS ARE STRONGER THAN YOUR TOOTH.
To prepare for my second attempt at having the teeth or the amalgam fillings removed, I had to create an apparent recognized emergency. That does not include dying from mercury toxicity! The literature is correct. I wanted to either break the amalgams free of the molar teeth, or, at least break off a noticeable piece. I had no proper tools. A dentist had previously refused to lend me a molar dental pliers because of possible liability (??) arising out of my not using it correctly on myself. I could not afford the $30 to $50 to purchase such a tool from a supplier for each tooth. So I tried to pull, crack, or chip with a small pair of vice-grip pliers. I mention this here because if I thought of it, someone else has, or will also.
MY MOLARS were rock solid tight in my gums and had long roots.
They were tight because of my restricted diet, not for lack of mercury influence. My dental nerves have always been sensitive. I scratched off some surface amalgam and heard each crack before nerve pain forced me to stop and reconsider with more Spiritual Guidance. It was likely that if anything further was done, I would crush the molar with little harm to the amalgam. Then, the tooth would have to be extracted in pieces --- a potentially long, costly, and painful process. Do NOT try this! Unless your tooth is practically falling out or the nerve is dead in your tooth, you will do more damage than good.
AT THE EMERGENCY DENTAL CLINIC, dentist #2 listened to me.
I asked him 3 different times to simply extract the 2 molars and save us all time and money. I did not mention toxicity this time. The dentist took x-rays. He considered that my right-side molar was possibly "leaking" and should be replaced. He noticed that the gum was inflamed in the area (from being grazed by the pliers) and assumed that there must be a gum infection. That meant 2 days on an antibiotic prescription BEFORE dental work could be done. Bacteria apparently negate the influence of anaesthesia, and, encourage mercury amalgam degradation. And recent reports state that over 50% of North Americans have gum disease.
LOGICALLY, he also suspected that two teeth located on opposite sides of the mouth would not likely both go bad at once. How to find the one that was REALLY bad and referring pain to the other healthy tooth? There goes rationalization again, times two. He judged that the marks left by the pliers indicated that I had a lot of plaque on those teeth? He prescribed Tylenol 3 for any pain and carefully warned me not to use more than a certain dose, or for a longer period of time --- as they could cause KIDNEY damage. Frustrated, again.
DENTIST #3 advertised as not using amalgams.
I went, explained my mercury toxicity diagnosis and the desire for two extractions. This dentist was actually informed and understanding about mercury toxicity. He had not used dental amalgams in his practice since 1985! He pointed out that he could only look after one amalgam because of time and Social Services restraints.
HE WAS ALSO PERCEPTIVE in finding that my right front lower bicuspid filling, a relatively small one, had been broken. He showed me it with his mirror. Possibly 2/3rds of the surface had been broken away, unknown to me. He considered it to be the most pressing repair to make. I agreed with his recommendation. This dental work was the fastest and least painful of any dental work I had received from at least 14 dentists over the previous 40 years. The new filling was a plastic one.
DENTAL IMPLANTS had been my plan for over 6 years.
I had lost several molars by then and had originally planned to have 3 implants put in and my old amalgams replaced with mew or with porcelain. All of the brochures and dentist feedback I had reviewed then and since, with the exception of what I was told by Dentist #3 had suggested that I could have implants easily placed anywhere in my gums with at least an 80% success rate. That had encouraged me to have extraction over the previous 6 years rather than filling replacement as a cost-saving measure.
NOW FOR SOME FACTS ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS.
Implants are really only intended to replace teeth at the FRONT of the mouth. That is were you have the strongest bone structure. A less effective location is the lower rear dental bone. It may be almost impossible and is generally the most risky to attempt to place implants in the upper rear of the mouth as the bone structure there is the weakest in the mouth.
In the view of this dentist, removing teeth that could be saved is like an amputation. I had been perceiving same as a temporary measure. While my perception might be more applicable for a poor person regarding teeth at the front of the mouth, his would apply for all persons regarding rear teeth. Consider this in your planning.
DAY ZERO (1):
RESULTS FROM ONE AMALGAM REMOVAL.
6 HOURS later, my energy level had gone up 50%
This lowered my sleep requirement and my tiredness correspondingly.
I was VERY hungry, immediately, for the first time in 9 months.
REMOVING A SECOND AMALGAM would lower my active toxicity by 90%
This meant that the upper molar amalgam had to be replaced or the tooth out. With little money, my alternatives appeared to be an extraction, a filling for $220, or, another emergency. Clearly, economically, it had to be an extraction. I called the office of dentist #4. I had met her in my earlier amalgam toxicity scenario. Remember, she would pull any tooth for any reason as long as she was paid. If I brought in recent X-rays --- which I had from the emergency dental clinic (dentist #2) --- the cost was estimated to be $40 to $80.
TO RETRIEVE the X-RAYS, I went back to the office of dentist (#3).
I thanking him and his office for the superb work that they had done and mentioned in passing that I could not wait another month or more until the bureaucracy could accept another "emergency". I had made an appointment for the extraction the next evening. I would return to his office later for less urgent work. First I had to get my health back. A job would then provide me with better and more dependable income. Seems like a simple equation. Too bad for the taxpayer that the politicians can't figure it out!
THIS TRULY PROFESSIONAL and ETHICAL DENTIST (#3) expressed personal grief at my arrangements for extraction. He regarded it a requirement of his profession to save a tooth if possible. I would later more fully understand his position and its merit. I had no options left that I could think of. He suggested a new option which depended upon his involvement and the unlikely support of a third party --- which would not be verified until shortly before the work was to be done ... early the next afternoon. I considered it, and was Spiritually Guided to try it, so agreed.
THE OFFICE OF DENTIST #4 (Pull-All) called the next day to request that I move up the evening appointment to 4.00 P.M. I was just going out to the office of dentist #3 (No-Amalgams) so I said I would soon confirm, cancel, or postpone. I arrived at the office of dentist #3. We received support of the third party, the appointment was on ... and I phoned and cancelled the later appointment with dentist #4. The second very bad amalgam (VBA) was removed with a little freezing, much work and NO PAIN. I was feeling so good when I left his office that I ate a large submarine sandwich several minutes later. That, had NEVER happened before.
DAY ZERO (2):
THE RESULT of the removal of 2 terrible amalgams was quite astounding.
I went home and took another 2 hours sleep for a total of 7.5 hours in the past 24. That was already only 1/2 the 15 hours I had been requiring almost daily. I then went for a walk which gave me a total walking distance for the day to 3 times what I had been daily capable of for 3 months. I returned home carrying a heavy load of groceries, as Spiritually Guided, which put 3 times the maximum amount of food in my cupboards than had been there anytime in the past 3 months. I was in spontaneous good spirits since the removal of the second amalgam. That spirit of enjoying being around other people had been largely absent for the previous 3 months.
THE CRUSHING TIREDNESS which I had going into the dentist's office, had left with the amalgam, and never returned. I began to feel tired at 11.00 P.M. and started to prepare for bed. I felt hungry and thirsty, unusually, and after having some spiced red pepper humus with soda biscuits and sweet cider, I worked on this report until 5.30 A.M. I had gone from sleeping 15 hours per day to having been active for 22 hours out of the previous 30!
AMALGAM REMOVAL has demonstrated to me, for a second time, just how much of an impact mercury toxicity can have, AND, just how fast the benefit of its removal can appear.
